TEMPE — ASU and preseason No. 7 Duke will face off Sunday in a men's basketball exhibition scheduled as head coach Bobby Hurley's return to Cameron Indoor Stadium.

“There will be mixed feelings. I haven't really been there much in the past, so it'll be a lot of fun to get a chance to see (legendary Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski) this weekend and just treat it like a high-level away game. That’s really the main focus,” Hurley said Thursday. “The other things are nice. I'll think about it and look up, see my jersey up there, maybe a few of those banners.

“Hopefully this gives me and the boys some inspiration.”

Hurley said the last time he was at Cameron Indoor was for homecoming weekend while his oldest daughter was attending Duke several years ago.

“For me it’s a kind of sacred place,” said the coach. “You weren't great all the time in life, and this was a place that was very special. I was doing so well there, so I refused to go back.”

However, as Hurley said, the focus will be on basketball, and he said his team still has some kinks to work out after struggling to win in a closed scrimmage on Saturday. He said he was disappointed with the Sun Devils' performance on both sides.

“I think we struggled to hit the shots I saw in practice. We basically suffered too many defensive performances. I just think toward the end of the fight we showed some resilience and resilience and made some plays, which was positive,” Hurley said. “But overall I wasn't really happy and I told the boys that and I think they're self-aware enough to realize that we weren't anywhere near where we needed to be to to be able to compete at the level we are at. I hope so.”

One of the reasons Hurley has high expectations for the group is the perimeter talent, which he called the best group he's had as a coach at Big 12 Media Days this week. He said It's the struggle to find opportunities for deserving players that gives him so much confidence.

Duke has its own top-tier talent, led by Cooper Flagg, the projected top pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. Hurley said Flagg deserves all the hype he's gotten so far.

Hurley drew similarities between the turnover rate both schools experienced this offseason, bringing in top-10 freshmen from both, while 6-foot-10 Jayden Quaintance paved the way for one of the better recruiting classes in ASU history.

Expect to see Quaintance alongside big men Basheer Jihad and Shawn Phillips Jr. at times, as Hurley likes the interchangeability of the three. He added that it was unlikely that all three would ever share the floor at the same time because it would minimize the perimeter depth.

Hurley said he hasn't completed the rotation yet and is waiting to do it until the last minute, until the official opening game on Nov. 5 against Idaho State.

““I try to get guys out of the mindset of thinking about a starting lineup and just thinking about maximizing their minutes and forcing myself to not want to take them out of the game,” Hurley said. “And if you go out there and play right and play well, then everything will take care of itself.”

The Sun Devils are expected to be at full strength on Sunday, as a previous minor knee problem to Austin Nunez was the only major injury this preseason.

“The game will be televised. Many teams conduct secret scrimmages. I want to know sooner. I want to get these guys in front of a crowd. I want them to feel that type of environment,” Hurley said at the start of the preseason. “Even the younger guys who have a big influence on what we do, Joson (Sanon), (Quaintance) and Amier Ali, will get the chance to play in this environment and hopefully that will help us.” early phases of the non-conference (schedule).”

Hurley said Thursday that two of the three freshmen struggled in the closed scrimmage, and he expects nerves to play an even bigger role Sunday given the packed crowd at Cameron Indoor.

“It's just a great thing for us to be tested in this way and see where we are on Sunday and have more footage that we can break down to prepare for the real deal, but yeah, it will go quickly,” Hurley said. “Santa Clara is obviously really good this year and then we go to Gonzaga. Right after that, GCU is here in town, so we have a bunch of those games coming up right away, so we need to put our foot on the gas and get going.”
