JD Vance dismisses Russia election interference lawsuit: 'That's what they do'

Senator JD Vance of Ohio addressed recent Russian disinformation efforts in the US election after the FBI, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said in a statement on Friday that Russia was behind a fake video media that shows someone tearing up ballot papers in the key swing state of Pennsylvania.

On “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan,” the Republican vice presidential nominee would not commit to taking action against Russia to hold it accountable for meddling in the presidential election.

“I think many countries will try to manipulate our voters. They will try to rig our elections. That’s what they do,” Vance told Brennan. “I think the bigger question is what is in our best interest vis-à-vis Russia, not what price Russia should pay for publishing social media videos.”

US intelligence has determined that Russia is trying to undermine the Harris campaign while Iran is trying to undermine the Trump campaign. In one case, the ODNI report outlined that a Russian military intelligence unit “attempted to recruit a likely unsuspecting U.S. person to organize protests in the United States.”

Vance criticized the effectiveness of the sanctions the Biden administration imposed on Russia over its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, arguing that American foreign policy should be based not on whether a country “spreads videos on social media,” but rather on that , what's on social media In the best interests of the United States.

Asked whether Russia's manipulation crossed a red line, Vance said he thought it was “bad.” However, when asked whether he would ask Moscow to “stop manipulating it,” Vance expressed doubt that it would have any impact.

“Sure, of course. I'd call her to break up, but this isn't a schoolyard. I’ll call.”

Moscow to abolish it, will they actually do it? The next Vice President of the United States will engage in saber rattling.

Vance turned the conversation to what he said was most important to him: that Russia “stop supporting the Iranians while the Iranians are committing aggression in the Middle East.” On Friday, Israel carried out limited attacks on military sites in Iran in retaliation for Iran's Oct. 1 attack in which about 180 ballistic missiles were fired at Israel.

Experts say Russian disinformation groups have also created unfounded claims against Minnesota Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz and spread a hoax that Vice President Kamala Harris was involved in a hit-and-run accident in 2011.

When it comes to the integrity of state-run elections, the Republican vice presidential candidate who spoke with Brennan on Saturday in Erie, Pennsylvania, expressed confidence.

“I think they are doing a good job. I think they’re doing a better job than they did in 2020,” Vance said. “And most importantly, I think most Americans see that whether it's voter ID in places like Wisconsin or Georgia or a slight tightening of signature verification rules, I think our elections are in pretty good shape in places like Pennsylvania in 2024.”

He said he only expects legal challenges “if something comes up,” for example, “if an illegal immigrant votes, yes, we will challenge that in court.” Under federal law, it is illegal for non-citizens to vote in federal elections.

Asked whether he would abide by the Constitution and assuring that his vice president would do so as well, Vance said “of course” but noted that he was not worried about Trump on the matter.

“I think Donald Trump believes in the American Constitution. I know he does. I saw it in his actions. I talked to him about it,” Vance said. “But you asked for me, and personally my loyalty is first and foremost to the American people and the Constitution of the United States.”
