The listeria outbreak that has led to independent nationwide recalls of Boar's Head meat, BrucePac chicken products and cheese products from Pennsylvania-based BeiHollow Farm is now impacting a popular breakfast staple: waffles.

Over 500 different types of waffles sold in grocery stores across the U.S. have been recalled because they may be contaminated with listeria.

TreeHouse Foods announced the voluntary recall after routine testing discovered a problem at one of their manufacturing facilities. The waffle products come in many varieties and are sold under many different private labels.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said in its recall warning that Listeria monocytogenes “is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the frail or elderly, and others with weakened immune systems.”

What is listeria?

Listeria is a food-borne bacterial illness that can be very harmful to pregnant people, newborns, older adults and people with weakened immune systems, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The CDC said invasive disease symptoms usually appear two weeks after eating food contaminated with listeria. Listeria infections are the third leading cause of death from foodborne illness in the United States.
