There are unseeded finalists at both of this week's ATP 500 events in Basel and Vienna. In the former, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard will fight Ben Shelton for the title, while in the latter, Karen Khachanov will face Jack Draper.

Swiss Indoors Basel: (6) Ben Shelton vs. Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard

Shelton has been very consistent in 2024, but before arriving in Basel he hadn't had a particularly deep run since winning a clay court title in Houston. The 23rd-ranked American went all out this week with wins over Tomas Martin Etcheverry, Stan Wawrinka, Andrey Rublev and Arthur Fils, losing just one set to top-seeded Rublev. The red-hot Fils had won 13 consecutive matches at the ATP 500 level before losing to his doubles partner 6-3, 7-6(9) on Saturday.

Next up for Shelton is a second meeting with Mpetshi Perricard in the championship game on Sunday. Their only meeting so far this summer took place on the grass courts of the Queen's Club, where the 1.80 meter tall Frenchman prevailed 6:3, 7:6(3). Unsurprisingly, Mpetshi Perricard didn't have a single break point in this match. The 21-year-old has not yet given up his serve in Basel and only had to save three break points – all in the quarterfinals against Denis Shapovalov. It wouldn't be surprising if there were no breaks of serve and multiple tiebreakers (maybe even three) in this game, but Shelton has a slight advantage as an ATP 500 winner (Tokyo 2023) and given his extremely impressive form in Basel so far.

Erste Bank Open: (7) Jack Draper vs. Karen Khachanov

Draper and Khachanov will face each other for the fourth time in their careers on Sunday in Vienna. Khachanov leads the head-to-head series 2-1 but their first game ended with Draper falling out, while at the 2022 US Open the score was level at a set apiece. During the 2023 campaign they split two Adelaide competitions into two consecutive weeks.

Both guys are smoking hot right now. Khachanov is turning the corner near the finish line after a lackluster season, with a title last week in Almaty followed by Vienna defeats to Thiago Seyboth Wild, Brandon Nakashima, Matteo Berrettini and Alex de Minaur. Draper's success has been more consistent throughout 2024. The 22-year-old Brit is ranked 18th in the world and is 14-3 in his last 17 tournament games since Cincinnati. He punched his ticket to this week's final by defeating Kei Nishikori, Luciano Darderi, Tomas Machac and Lorenzo Musetti. Expect Khachanov to hit the wall at some point – but even if he doesn't, Draper is a slightly superior indoor player.
