We go there to win – Andre Onana is confident Man Utd can beat West Ham

Andre Onana says Manchester United need points and goals as the closely scrutinized Erik ten Hag leads the team to West Ham on Sunday.

Only once in the Premier League era have the Red Devils scored fewer points at this point in the season than their current 11 points, as pressure mounts on both the team and the coach.

Ten Hag has lost his last two visits to West Ham's London Stadium, where United are competing in the Europa League after a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Fenerbahce.

Onana pulled off a fantastic double save to secure the point at the rocking Sukru Saracoglu Stadium and is looking forward to playing away in front of another packed house on Sunday afternoon.

“100 percent (I’m looking forward to it) and we’re going there to win,” the United goalkeeper said.

“As Manchester United players we have an obligation to go anywhere to try to win.

“Sometimes it won't be possible but we are going to London to win because we need points and we need to score goals, we need to win games so we will try to achieve that.”

United only left the Fenerbahce Stadium in the early hours of Friday morning and stayed in Istanbul overnight before heading to London rather than home due to the quick turnaround.

The PA news agency understands Ten Hag's Red Devils have been training on the eve of a game at Leyton Orient's Brisbane Road and will need to show greater impact in front of goal.

This wastefulness has been a problem all season and was evident in Istanbul. That needs to change at West Ham as United look to build on last weekend's 2-1 comeback win against Brentford.

“It will come, you know, it will come,” Onana said. “Everything in life is temporary. It will come, if not today, it will be tomorrow.

“We as defenders also have to take responsibility. We were in the lead and I'm starting to question myself because maybe I can do better, even for my defenders.

“I don't think we need to pay attention to the strikers because they try.

“The chances are there and at the moment the ball isn't going into the net, but it will come. We lose together. We win together.”

Asked whether United are creating enough chances, Onana said: “I think we are in second or third position (in terms of chances created) and the most important thing is that we create chances.”

“So if we don’t create a chance we all have to worry, but the chances are there.

“They start there, so we have to be patient. And I know my boys are training for it. And I’m very happy with the way they fight.”

United have confirmed that Antony will miss the game against West Ham, but the length of the absence remains unknown as his ankle sprain is assessed.

The club said: “Erik ten Hag's side face West Ham without Antony, who missed training on Saturday after suffering an ankle sprain in the closing stages of the game against Fenerbahce.”
