Projected AP Top 25 after Ohio State sneaks past Nebraska, N

The first college football slate of Week 9 was pretty exciting, but not necessarily with the games fans were expecting. Norte Dame vs. Navy was never exciting, but Ohio State and Nebraska were close until the end. Meanwhile, Indiana continued to roll and Ole Miss rebounded after losing to LSU last week. Here's a look at what the AP Rankings would look like after an entertaining starting lineup before many of the best teams in the country take the field tonight.

  1. Oregon Ducks
  2. Georgia Bulldogs
  3. Penn State Nittany Lions
  4. Ohio State Buckeyes
  5. Texas Longhorns
  6. Miami Hurricanes
  7. Tennessee Volunteers
  8. Norte Dame fights against Irish
  9. LSU Tigers
  10. Clemson Tigers
  11. Cyclones in the state of Iowa
  12. Indiana Hoosiers
  13. Boise State Broncos
  14. BYU Cougars
  15. Texas A&M Aggies
  16. Pitt Panthers
  17. Alabama Crimson Tide
  18. Ole Miss Rebels
  19. Kansas State Wildcats
  20. Illinois battles Illinois
  21. Missouri Tigers
  22. SMU Mustangs
  23. Black knights of the army
  24. Vanderbilt Commodores
  25. Washington State Cougars

These rankings looked almost completely different. Ohio State trailed Nebraska 17-14 in the fourth quarter on Saturday before scoring the game-winning touchdown with just over six minutes left. There's no such thing as a bad win, but this certainly wasn't a convincing win for the Buckeyes. Will Howard was good for the most part, aside from one egregious interception, but the Buckeyes' complete inability to run the ball slowed the offense significantly.

Ohio State remains in fourth place because it won that game, but that wasn't the performance you'd want from this team after a loss and a bye week. Penn State awaits you in Happy Valley next week.

You would think that by running the ball so often that Navy would know what to do when a team tries to run against it a lot, but that wasn't the case on Saturday! Norte Dame gave Navy a good taste of their own ground game medicine by running for 265 yards and 4 touchdowns against the Midshipmen.

With a dominant, hands-down Top 25 win, the Irish jump a few places in the standings to 8th place. Navy won't fall too far down the rankings, but will likely need a few more convincing wins over the next few weeks to regain its spot in the top 25. Washington State moves up while Navy drops out. We'll just predict this every week until it actually happens.

It wasn't a high-scoring affair in Oxford, but Ole Miss doesn't care – a win was all that mattered when they beat LSU in a heartbreaker last weekend, and they got a win when they beat Oklahoma 26-14. Jaxson Dart threw for 311 yards in the win.

The Rebels will likely be squarely in college football's playoff bubble come year's end, and their game against Georgia on Nov. 9 will likely tip the season in one direction or another. But for now, the team is happy to stay at No. 18 after Oklahoma's demise.

The Hoosiers didn't put 56 on the board like they did last week against Nebraska, but 31 was enough against Washington. Tayven Jackson started in place of injured quarterback Kurtis Rourke and did just enough to lead Indiana to victory, throwing for 124 yards and a touchdown and then rushing for another touchdown.

The Hoosiers defense was the star of the show on Saturday, hitting Huskies quarterback Will Rogers twice, including a 67-yard pick six in the first quarter. At 8-0, the Hoosiers move up to No. 12 in the CFP field.

The main games on Thursday and Friday featured Pitt and Boise State and each team was impressed. The Panthers defeated Syracuse 41-13 on Thursday and put together one of the most impressive defensive performances of the season – the Pitt defense forced Kyle McCord into five interceptions, three of which were returned for touchdowns. Three pick sixes in one game! With this win, Pitt moves up to 16th place.

Boise State wasn't quite as dominant, but still got a road win against a good UNLV team. The Broncos are 1-6, their only loss coming against the top-ranked team in the country by three points. Sounds like a college football playoff team to us!
