Michigan tight end Colston Loveland calls Michigan State 'little brother'

play

In 2007 there was Mike Hart.

And then there was Chase Winovich in 2018.

In 2024, Colston Loveland continued the trend of Michigan football players referring to Michigan State as “little brother” after the 117th game between in-state rivals. The Wolverines defeated the Spartans 24-17 at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor.

The teams battled on the field after the game ended, with Loveland in the middle.

REGARD: Fight Michigan vs. Michigan State: After the Wolverines' victory there is a “disappointing” duel

“Little brother, stick with the little brother thing,” Loveland told Big Ten Network immediately after the game. “MSU, the little brother. They can do whatever they want. We knew it would be difficult. Everything within the confines of the game we do right, and after the game they want to be busy, and we're going to be busy.”

Later, Loveland addressed the fight again.

He head-butted Michigan State defender Anthony Jones, intensifying the scuffle.

“I kind of got carried away at the end,” Loveland told reporters. “I pushed a little bit and stuff like that, but you know that's how rivalry happens. It's all just heat of the moment after two losses, I really needed this one so I was just kind of excited. We respect every opponent we play against, they are a great football team.

THE GAME: Michigan football unleashes a whole bag of tricks to beat Michigan State 24-17

Loveland, who Michigan head coach Sherone Moore compared to NFL superstar Travis Kelce, is expected to be a first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. He recorded six receptions for 67 yards and two touchdowns against the Spartans, increasing his season totals to 411 yards and four touchdowns in seven games.

He missed the September 21 game against USC due to a shoulder injury.

Loveland has scored four touchdowns in his three-game career against Michigan State, all wins for the Wolverines. He didn't score in 2022, but he recorded two touchdowns in each of 2023 and 2024. Meanwhile, Michigan State has only scored three total offense touchdowns in its last three rivalry games.

Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore wasn't happy with the in-state rivals' on-field struggles, but seemed to think Jones head-butted Loveland.

In reality, Loveland headbutted Jones.

“I told the team that regardless of what happened and how it started, it was unacceptable,” Moore told reporters. “There were people tweeting at us and we responded. The guy ended up headbutting Colston. Our job in representing this university is not to react to it, but to let the referees deal with it. That's something we'll take care of internally.” Make sure we take care of it. This is not Michigan football.
