Grizzlies star questionable against Magic in home opener

The Memphis Grizzlies announced Saturday afternoon that guard Ja Morant is questionable for Saturday's home opener against the Orlando Magic at 7 p.m. due to right thigh soreness.

The two-time All-Star sustained the injury and was briefly sidelined in the third quarter of Friday night's 128-108 loss to the Houston Rockets. He later returned to finish the game but only played 24 minutes and finished the game with 24 points and two assists.

Morant's reduced minutes were the talk of the game after Friday night's game because backup point guard Scotty Pippen Jr. played longer than Morant. Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins said the team is slowly bringing Morant back as he returns to regular action after playing on time in just two of the team's five preseason games.

“We are working with him and the medical team on how we want to use him on this track now,” Jenkins said after the game. “Obviously he was out for part of the pre-season so he got his legs and conditioning perfect.”

Forward Jaren Jackson Jr. was listed as questionable after being given a questionable designation on Friday's initial injury report as he recovers from a left hamstring strain that has hampered him throughout the preseason. He was not used against Houston.

“Make good progress,” Jenkins said of Jackson before Friday’s game. “Had a really good session today. We’ll see how he reacts tomorrow, but the trend is in a really good direction.”

The report said guard John Konchar was a doubt due to right foot pain. The sixth-year veteran played 22 minutes against Houston and finished with seven points, six rebounds and two steals.
