Dwight Howard upsets the Wolves for extending Rudy Gobert

It looks like the strange parade of hate against Rudy Gobert won't be ending any time soon.

Gobert signed a three-year, $110 million extension in the hours before the Wolves' season-opening loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday. Eight-time All-Star center Dwight Howard expressed dissatisfaction with the deal on Wednesday.

Howard immediately hung his head in disbelief when asked about the extension of former NBA point guard Gilbert Arenas' podcast: Gil's Arena.

“He’s got three years left,” an exasperated Howard asked. “Minnesota, you guys could have given me ($10 million). What?! You couldn’t have given me ($10 million) for the rest of the season?”

Howard's reaction contrasted with that of Arenas, who considered the deal “a good deal” and said, “I don't mind.”

“I don’t understand it,” Howard said. “I have nothing against Rudy, but, come on, are you giving up on KAT?”

When asked if he liked the trade that sent Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks for Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo, Keita Bates-Diop and a protected first-round pick, Howard responded forcefully, “No!”

“Come on, KAT has been there for nine years. Without KAT they won't get where they need to go. Let's be honest. Come on, man. Then you just throw it away? And he goes to the fire department,” Howard said.

While Howard says he has no problem with Gobert, his previous comments stand Gil's Arena would indicate otherwise. In September, Howard claimed Gobert didn't “deserve” to win one of his record four NBA Defensive Player of the Year awards, saying, “I don't see him as an elite defender.”

Howard's recent comments continue a frankly sad and long, long history of strange and largely unwarranted hatred for one of the best big men in the world. From Shaq's harsh criticism to Draymond Green's perennial rant, there has been no shortage of criticism of Gobert around the league.
