Rublev against Shelton, Tsitsipas against Fils

There are two all-seeded showdowns scheduled for the quarterfinals on Friday in Basel, with Nitto ATP Finals contenders Andrey Rublev and Stefanos Tsitsipas on the program. They face Ben Shelton and Arthur Fils respectively.

(1) Andrey Rublev vs. (6) Ben Shelton

Rublev and Shelton will compete against each other for the first time in their careers when they meet in the quarterfinals of the Swiss Indoors Basel on Friday afternoon. It's been up and down for Rublev, but a title in Madrid and a second place in Montreal are enough to keep him in the Nitto ATP Finals spot (currently No. 8). The Russian got off to a solid start in Basel, where he sent off Nuno Borges and Alejandro Tabilo in straight sets.

Shelton didn't lose a set this week either, as he edged out Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Stan Wawrinka without too much trouble. The 23rd-ranked American has now won multiple games in five consecutive tournaments. However, Shelton was largely denied any really big victories in 2024 – which is why he was only able to achieve more than two wins once during this period (reaching the quarterfinals in Cincinnati). It's a head-to-head matchup and should be of high quality, but Rublev is more consistent from the back of the court and will likely force Shelton to play just enough defense to handle it the top seed crosses the finish line.

(3) Stefanos Tsitsipas vs. (7) Arthur Fils

While Rublev is currently in good shape to secure a ticket to Turin, Tsitsipas still needs at least one more great result and possibly even deep runs both Basel and Paris. The 11th-ranked Greek gave himself a chance this week, beating Francisco Cerundolo in the third set tiebreak before seeing off Botic van de Zandschulp 7-6(3), 7-5.

Next up for Tsitsipas is a second meeting with Fils, who won their only match on the indoor hard courts in Antwerp last fall 7:6 (5), 7:6 (4). The 20-year-old Frenchman has hit the ground running this season, moving up to No. 20 in the rankings thanks to a 34-14 record on the main tour. Amazingly, Fils is 12-0 in his last 12 ATP 500s matches – with titles in Hamburg and Tokyo followed by Basel defeats to Daniel Altmaier and Pedro Martinez. Fils is in superior form so hope he extends the win streak to 13.

Selection: Fils in 3
