These are the most popular costumes

The second most popular costume in the Boston area? A servant, one of the little yellow creatures from the Despicable Me films. And in third place: Lydia Deetz, the goth teenager and star of 1988's “Beetlejuice” (played by Winona Ryder) – and the goth mother and star of the 2024 sequel “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” (also played by Winona Ryder).

In fact, “Beetlejuice” costumes are proving popular not only in Boston but across the country this Halloween. On the Frightgeist list of the nation's top 25 costumes, two “Beetlejuice” characters – Shrunken Head Bob and Delores, Beetlejuice's ex-wife – are ranked No. 1 and No. 4 most wanted costumes, respectively. (Lydia Deetz ranks 23rd nationally.)

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which hit theaters in September, drew local attention after director Tim Burton, actress Jenna Ortega and other cast members were spotted filming in Melrose in November 2023. The film received a three-star review from the Globe's Odie Henderson.

The most searched costumes nationwide included Raygun, an Australian breakdancer whose performance at the Paris Olympics went viral; Envy, a new character from the “Inside Out” universe; and Sabrina Carpenter, the pop star who came to Boston this month for her “Short n' Sweet” tour.

1. Deadpool: The Marvel Comics anti-hero and alter ego of Wade Wilson. Following the release of Deadpool & Wolverine starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman earlier this year, the character's popularity rose again.

2. Minion: One of the tiny yellow creatures that serve as Gru's sidekicks in the Despicable Me series. Her uniform consists of large metal glasses, blue overalls and black gloves.

3. Lydia Deetz: Beetlejuice's best friend from the “Beetlejuice” films. She has two iconic looks – a fluffy red wedding dress and her usual all-black outfit with pointed bangs.

4. Shego: An animated character and villain from Disney's “Kim Possible” series. She is known for her black hair and green and black jumpsuit.

5. Captain Hook: The main antagonist of Disney's “Peter Pan.” With many different depictions, he is commonly known as the pirate, known for his hook as a hand.

1. Shrunken Head Bob: A fan-favorite character from Tim Burton's Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

2. Raygun: Australian breakdancer Rachael Gunn, who went viral with a breaking routine that earned zero points at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

3. CatNap: A villainous, smiling purple cat from “Poppy Playtime,” a survival horror video game series.

4. Delores: Beetlejuice's ex-wife from the movie Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. She is known for her long black wedding dress and the braces that run down her face.

5. Pomni: The protagonist of Glitch Productions' animated web series The Amazing Digital Circus. She is known for her red and blue circus jester ensemble.

6. Envy: One of the new emotions introduced in “Inside Out 2,” released earlier this year. She has metallic blue hair pinned back with pink hair clips and wears a purple polka dot dress.

7. Red: Also known as Princess Red of Hearts, she is a protagonist in the Disney film Descendants: The Rise of Red. She is known for her red hair and all-red clothing.

8. Doctor Doom: Marvel Comics supervillain played by Robert Downey Jr. in the upcoming 2026 film Avengers: Doomsday.

9. Sabrina Carpenter: Singer known for this year's hits “Espresso” and “Please Please Please.” Her signature look includes go-go boots and a sweetheart corset.
