Packers writers answer burning question about Jordan Love interceptions

play

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love has returned after four games from the MCL sprain he suffered in Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

He is second in the NFL with 15 passing touchdowns, while on the other hand he is first in the league with eight interceptions.

We asked our PackersNews reporters this question of the week:

With 10 games left in the regular season, would you accept the over/under of Jordan Love finishing with 16 interceptions?

Tom Silverstein: I think it's over if he doesn't go on one of those streaks like last year. For some reason, some of the best QBs in the league throw a lot of interceptions. Shoot, Patrick Mahomes has eight, as does Love. It may be sustainable for Mahomes, but it's not sustainable for Love. He definitely has to reduce them. The only time this is acceptable is when he has to push the envelope because the Packers are a few points behind. These are necessary evils for a quarterback with comeback ability. As long as he isn't sloppy and throwing them in on low-rate passes, 17 interceptions this year won't be the end of the world. Tom Brady hit three and defeated the Packers in an NFC championship game.

Ryan Wood: I would take the company. And yes, I know Love is on track to exceed that number if he plays the last ten games. Because his eight interceptions this season came in just five games, and I can do basic math. Well, not me. But I just plugged those numbers into a calculator, and that's on track to throw 24 interceptions if Love finishes the season with 15 games. I just think at some point we'll see him regress back to the average he showed in the final two months of last year when no one in the NFL took better care of the football. Love had just one interception through nine games and threw 300 passes in those games. He finally threw two picks in the second half of the Packers' last game, the NFC divisional round loss at San Francisco, and the picks have increased this season. But let's remember that Love threw 10 interceptions in his first nine starts before taking care of the football for nine games last season. This is a quarterback who has shown the ability to take care of the football at a high level. I think we'll see him reduce his selection significantly in the second half of this season.

Dominique Yates: I'm going downstairs. Eight is too high – considering he missed two games – but that's bound to happen since Love likes to play aggressively. I don't make every decision based on him. An example in the game with the Cardinals: If Bo Melton doesn't play during his route, Love doesn't have an INT in that game. The biggest thing for him is that he does more good than bad, so I think you can live with some of those mistakes. Although I have a feeling he will stay under 16, I don't think he will be far off.

Pete Dougherty: I can take the under, but only just. Love's eight interceptions come in five games, so he throws them too quickly. His aggressiveness has grown with his confidence. Some of his riskier throws worked, others ended in interceptions. He's still trying to figure out where to draw the line, and there are certainly more interceptions to come. But based on his performance last season (one interception in the last eight games of the regular season, three in the last 10 games including playoffs), there's also reason to believe he'll get a better idea of what he can accomplish can and cannot go away when we get into November and December. He has a lot of confidence in his arm, and judging by his words and style of play, he'll still take some opportunities, but we don't expect him to quite get to 16 interceptions by the end of the season.
