YSL defense attorney details meeting with Fulton prosecutor to try to 'solve the case'

A defense attorney in the YSL case shares details Mark Winne, Channel 2 investigative reporter about a series of meetings he had with Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis to see if the case could be resolved before it goes to the jury.

The trial of hip-hop superstar Young Thug and the alleged criminal street gang YSL is now the longest criminal trial in Georgia's history.

Defense attorney E. Jay Abt says he and other defense attorneys had a series of meetings with Prosecutor Willis Wednesday night and Thursday morning to see if there was a way to solve the case before it dragged on any longer.

“Every meeting with opposing counsel is about clarifying the case as much as possible. And that’s what we try to do when possible,” Abt said.

Abt said he served as lead attorney for Deamonte Kendrick, better known as rapper Yak Gotti, and attorneys for five of the other six defendants, including Young Thug and Abt's co-counsel Katie Hingerty.

“We are making a good faith effort to resolve the case. I don’t know if that will be possible or not,” Abt said.

He says the impetus for the meetings was clearly a flood of mistrial motions made to Judge Paige Reese Whitaker, who took over the case when another judge was removed from the case in July.

“We have requested a mistrial from the Honorable Judge Whitaker based on what we believe to be extremely prejudicial evidence heard by the jury,” Abt said.

Abt said his client has been incarcerated in the Fulton County Jail for about two and a half years and will seek release on bail in the event of a mistrial.

The Fulton County District Attorney's Office declined to comment on ongoing plea negotiations.
