Hurricane Kristy has strengthened into a Category 4 storm as it heads into the Pacific Ocean, but is still not expected to make landfall.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Kristy first developed into a tropical storm off the west coast of Mexico on Monday, October 21, and strengthened into a hurricane just over 24 hours later.

According to the NHC's latest bulletin, maximum wind speeds associated with Kristy will be around 150 mph on Thursday, October 24, as the storm shifts westward, away from the mainland United States and Mexico.

Forecasters expect “some fluctuations” in Kristy’s intensity on the night of October 24th, “with rapid weakening expected on Friday, October 25th.”

The storm is expected to “turn northwest and then north-northwest” beginning Friday and “through the weekend.”

“Kristy is expected to weaken rapidly by the end of the weekend,” says the forecast discussion.

“This hurricane is moving due west and well out to sea at a high forward speed, so there is no need for concern for land,” said Brad Reinhart, a senior hurricane specialist at the NHC, according to the Associated Press.

Additionally, forecasters said Kristy will produce waves that will “affect portions of the western coast of the Baja California Peninsula later this week and into the weekend.”

Meteorologists say these waves will “likely lead to life-threatening surf and rip current conditions” along the coast.

Meanwhile, no tropical cyclone activity is expected in the Atlantic for at least the next seven days.

Hurricane season ends November 30th.
