According to ESPN's Shams Charania, the NBA will likely review the Philadelphia 76ers' management plan for star center Joel Embiid.

Embiid missed the entire preseason and the team announced Tuesday that he will sit out the first week of the regular season.

The 2022-23 MVP has struggled with injuries throughout his NBA career. Most recently, he had to sit out almost the entire second half of last year due to a torn meniscus.

Embiid, who turned 30 in March, told ESPN's Tim Bontemps that he and the Sixers plan to be even more proactive in keeping him as healthy as possible.

He showed up to training camp about 25 to 30 pounds lighter to relieve pressure on his knees. Regarding his workload, he indicated that he did not want to play on consecutive nights.

“If I had to guess, I would probably never play back-to-back games for the rest of my career,” Embiid said.

Daryl Morey, president of basketball operations, also told Bontemps that the Sixers would “take a smart approach” when it comes to load management, and that could include limiting Paul George to back-to-back games.

Especially since the NBA implemented new rest rules last year, an investigation into the Sixers' handling of Embiid was inevitable, and the investigation itself is not evidence that Philadelphia is doing anything wrong.

There are various exceptions that allow players to sit out without their team being penalized. The Sixers will obviously try to argue that Embiid falls into that category based on his injury history.
