Tensions escalate at Delhi's Jamia Millia Islamia University during Diwali celebrations

A brawl broke out during Diwali celebrations at Delhi's Jamia Millia Islamia University on Tuesday evening (October 22), prompting police intervention outside the campus.

The Diwali celebration was disrupted after a clash between two groups.

A video of the incident shows a group of people allegedly chanting slogans during Diwali celebrations at the Jamia campus.

In other clips on social media, some students claimed that a group of people were chanting “Palestine Zindabad” while disrupting Diwali celebrations.

According to reports, the incident took place during the annual Diwali celebration program of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Tensions escalated when members of a group destroyed rangolis allegedly made by students, leading to a confrontation between the two sides.

According to reports, the altercation took place at Gate No. 7 of the Delhi University campus.

“The incident took place between 7:30 pm and 8:00 pm near Gate 7. A group of students affiliated to ABVP were putting up diyas and preparing rangolis for Diwali, which displeased another group of students. The other group destroyed the decorations, leading to a scuffle. “Both sides made slogans” The Indian Express quoted Deputy Commissioner of Police South East Ravi Kumar.

The videos, which went viral on social media, show people entering the event shouting slogans, which led to a physical altercation between the two groups.

In an official statement, the ABVP said that outside “religious extremists and anti-social elements” disrupted the event at the venue.

“They raised provocative slogans like ‘Palestine Zindabad’, destroyed the lamps (diyas), destroyed the rangoli (traditional art) and started attacking the Jamia students who attended the celebration. The university management remained a mute spectator,” the ABVP reportedly said.

“In this unfortunate incident, these external miscreants also misbehaved with the girl students of the university, hurled offensive remarks at them and obliterated the rangoli they had created with their feet,” it said.

“The question arises: Is it a crime to celebrate Diwali or sing 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' at a central university in India?” the organization asked.

Asserting that the university campus belongs to all students and raising anti-national and extremist slogans in Jamia was unacceptable, the ABVP asked the Delhi Police to take strict action against the extremists and religious fanatics responsible for the violence during Deepotsav be responsible.
