The Celtics bury the Knicks and set the NBA 3-point record with 29

BOSTON – The Celtics and New York Knicks entered the opening game of the NBA season on Tuesday night, a clash that Jalen Brunson said earlier in the day was a good barometer – even though it was the first game – of where the Die are new designed Knicks take on the defending champions.

But instead of a tense, dramatic affair, the only drama this evening here at the TD Garden was watching Boston spend the final minutes of Tuesday's 132-109 victory trying to set the NBA record for 3-pointers break – and ultimately failed in a game.

After Al Horford reached the 3-point mark with Boston's third straight make to start the fourth quarter with 8:54 remaining, tying Boston to an NBA record 29 makes in 2020–21 with the Milwaukee Bucks one game – The Celtics then missed 13 straight attempts to break the ball, including three airballs and several other ugly misses.

Although the crowd chanted “One more 3” several times, it wasn't enough for Boston to get over the finish line – the only thing that went wrong for the Celtics on a night where they absolutely dominated the Knicks in their first game was outside acquisitions of the season Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns.

Boston quickly showed it was going to be a big night coming out, going 10 of 16 from 3-point range in the first quarter before tying a franchise record of 17 made triples and a 19-point halftime lead achieved.

In addition to the 29 3-pointers made, Boston shot 50 percent in the game and finished the game with 33 assists compared to just three turnovers.

In the end, Boston outscored New York by 54 points from behind the arc (29 made 3-for-11) and scored nearly more than New York attempted in total (30) on the night.
