GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Former Hawaii Democratic congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, who ran for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, has officially crossed the aisle.

“The Democratic Party has no home for people like us, but we have a home in the Republican Party – where we will be welcomed with open arms by President Trump and so many of you who love our country,” said Gabbard, who spoke to the Independents switched in 2022, told the crowd at Trump's rally Tuesday night in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Trump, 78, later noted that he had not expected Gabbard's announcement.

“Wow, that was a surprise,” the former president said, calling it a “tremendous honor” to have persuaded Gabbard to join the GOP ranks.

Gabbard is seeking a possible post in Trump's White House if he wins a second term next month, a source familiar with the discussions told The Post in August.

While details of what role she might seek have not yet been clarified, with serious discussions set to take place after Election Day, the source said Gabbard highlighted her experience with “foreign policy.”

There are 16 electoral votes up for election in North Carolina in November.

According to the latest RealCelarPolitics polling average, Trump leads Vice President Kamala Harris in the state by less than one percentage point.
