Lakers superstar LeBron James and his son Bronny will play together in the historic first game

When the NBA's new season begins Tuesday, one of the most anticipated moments will be a player who isn't even guaranteed to get on the court.

Welcome to the NBA, Bronny James.

With LeBron James' aging squad now entering its 22nd season and tying Vince Carter for the league record for longest career, James has been playing for so long that the Lakers drafted his eldest son, Bronny, 20, in June. When the Lakers face off The possibility that father and son could play together — which would be a first in the history of the NBA regular season — created the opportunity for a spectacle as remarkable as anything on Tuesday against the Minnesota Timberwolves others what happens in this game.

Although Lakers coach JJ Redick told reporters on Monday that a plan to have LeBron and Bronny play together has not yet been finalized and Bronny James said he didn't know if he would actually play against Minnesota, there is clearly an expectation the story surrounding the start of the season. Among those in attendance will be Ken Griffey Jr. and his father, who became the first father-son duo to play together in Major League Baseball in 1990.

“We made history; Now we can look at the story,” Griffey Jr. said on SiriusXM. “So that’s the cool thing about it.”

“Only two families can do it,” Bronny James told reporters Monday when asked about the Griffeys. “It’s going to be a crazy experience.”

Never before has a player selected 55th overall in the league's draft been under so much attention early in his first season. Although he and his father made headlines as the first father-son duo to appear in an NBA game during the preseason, Bronny James' performances eventually garnered more attention for his playmaking and offensive issues.

Bronny, who signed a four-year contract worth a reported $7.9 million, shot 29.7% from the field in six preseason games. As a starter in Friday's preseason finale, he made his first three-pointer and finished the preseason 1-for-12 from deep. Bronny admitted he had “bad games” in pre-season but said he was proud he kept playing.

“I feel like my confidence is the biggest thing for me right now,” he told reporters after the preseason finale in San Francisco.

During his only collegiate season for Southern California — after recovering from a cardiac arrest during a practice in the summer of 2023 — Bronny was not viewed by scouts as a dynamic offensive threat. Instead, they saw his value entering the league in how effectively he could make life difficult for opposing offensive players, which differed from that of his father, who was considered a leading scorer in his NBA debut in 2003.

LeBron did that and more in a career defined by length and accolades. What will his son's career look like? The first signs could appear on Tuesday.
