NFC West notes: Kyle Shanahan, Blake Corum, 49ers, Cardinals, Rams

49ers

49ers HC Kyle Shanahan didn't exactly call Week 6 against the Seahawks a must-win game, but he said so “It definitely feels like it” after starting their season 0-2 in the NFC West.

“I never want to say that if we don’t win, we have to win until we’re eliminated from the playoffs.” Shanahan said via 49ersWebZone. “This is the only time it’s a real must-win. But my words last week were, “I'll never say it's a must to win until it's this situation, but it sure as hell feels like it.” And I think that had to do with us “We only lost two close games in our division, namely 0-2 in our division against a division opponent.”

The 49ers will face the Chiefs in a rematch of Super Bowls LVIII and LIV in Week 7. Shanahan said they shouldn't get carried away by the emotions of previous games.

“I think everyone understands that we lost two Super Bowls to them, so that can cause a little bit of post-traumatic stress when you turn on the tape, but I think that's human nature.”Shanahan said. “But you have to be careful not to get involved in it. This game has nothing to do with previous games. That was last year. We're playing against a really good AFC opponent (this week). We are currently at .500 and want to stay at the top of our division and get a win. I mean, you think about what's in there, but in terms of how it plays out in a game, there's really no connection and you try to make sure that's not the case.”

Cardinals

  • Cardinals HC Jonathan Gannon confirms DT Bilal Nichols (Stinger) is out for the rest of the season while WR Marvin Harrison Jr. is still in the league's concussion protocol, per Darren Urban.
  • Gannon added RT Jonah Williams (Knee) has one “gostrange coincidence” return this season, per Urban.
  • Gannon said Harrison Jr. had no physical contact at practice Thursday, but he made progress “very encouraging” about Theo Mackie.

Aries

Rams HC Sean McVay said he was impressed with RB in the third round Blake Corum's approach and proves to be one “Instinctive runner.”

“I think what impressed me so much is the consistency of his approach, whether he got the opportunities behind Kyren (Williams) or not.” McVay said via the team's website. “But I thought he deserved it. Consistent work ethic and the ability to gain that confidence in these hands-on environments. And then I thought he did really well. There are still minimal chances, but he is heavy at the point of contact and a good, instinctive runner. Although he's done a great job and been able to show some breakthroughs through the offensive line and he's a guy that we're going to continue to give him the opportunities that we deserve. I really like what I saw and I was more impressed with the person and the way he handled it. And then I thought he maximized the ops he had against the Packers.”
