(WFSB) – Firefighters were busy battling multiple brush fires in Vernon and Berlin Monday afternoon.

The Vernon Fire Department received a call just before 2:30 p.m. about a fire near Reservoir Road in the northeast part of the city, south of I-84.

The fire, which spread over an area of ​​approximately nine hectares, was contained to a field. No homes were damaged and no injuries were reported.

Reservoir Road was closed for several hours while firefighters worked to bring the situation under control. However, residents were allowed to check their properties once the area was deemed safe.

Mutual aid was requested from surrounding towns, including Coventry, Tolland and Ellington, to help fight the fire.

Firefighters worked to keep the fire under control until the fire was officially declared extinguished at 5:30 p.m

A wildfire team from the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection also examined the site and assured that the fire would not spread further.

Although two firefighters were examined at the scene by Vernon paramedics, neither required hospitalization.

Firefighters from Bolton, Coventry, Ellington, Tolland and Willington joined forces to battle the fire, while teams from South Windsor and the Broad Brook portion of East Windsor manned the Vernon fire station during the incident.

The Vernon Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire.

While the fire was being contained in Vernon, another bush fire broke out in Berlin around 5:45 p.m

Flames from the Lamentation Mountain bushfire were visible for miles.

The Berlin fire chief said it could take two to three days for the fire to be fully under control due to the mountainous location, which is only accessible via hiking and ATV routes.

Local residents Mark and Madison Kelbacher expressed surprise, saying, “Not in Connecticut, I’ve never seen a fire before, that’s crazy. “This is a little scary and I’m shocked that it’s so close to home.”

No evacuations were necessary and no homes were in immediate danger.

DEEP is on scene to assist with the fire in Berlin, which is expected to require constant attention overnight.

Firefighting equipment presence will be maintained in the areas surrounding Sea Green Drive and Rosewood Drive as a precaution.

A flight ban has been imposed in the area and authorities are asking the public not to park near or on the Berlin Autobahn.

This incident is part of a larger trend as several wildfires have been reported in the region over the past week, including fires in Wethersfield, Burlington, Southington and Thompson.
