TOLLAND, CT – Tolland residents have felt the effects of two wildfires in the last two days.

On Sunday, Tolland Fire Department responded to a brush fire along the 400 block of Merrow Road.

It measured about 100 by 100 feet, Fire Chief John Littell said.

He said it was extinguished relatively quickly and no one was injured.

A large brush fire broke out in Vernon on Monday, sending a plume of smoke into the air that could be seen for miles and the smell of which reached as far away as Tolland.

Initial calls in the heavily wooded area north of the intersection of Reservoir Road-Fish and Game Road in the early afternoon.

The smoke was clearly visible from a distance from the Bolton Road overpass on Interstate 84 in Vernon, and firefighters said the smell was affecting people as far away as the Bald Hill area of ​​Tolland. Several Tolland residents reported a smoke situation in their homes.

Multiple fire departments responded – including Vernon, Tolland, Ellington, the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and Bolton – and ambulances were barricaded at the scene, stretchers were wheeled and carried to the area.

There was no immediate information on injuries, nor on the exact size of the fire. Firefighters went deep into the forest to fight the flames and smoke.

Officials said firefighters are expected to work in the woods for several hours.

On both Sunday and Monday, state officials said wildfire danger was very high across most of the state.

There was no immediate information about what may have caused the Vernon fire.

However, Littell said the warnings needed to be taken seriously.

“Whether it’s a campfire, a fire pit or a cigarette, the danger is there,” he said. “Don’t be the one to start a bushfire.”
