Justin Herbert, Rashawn Slater, Bradley Bozeman, Khalil Mack, Denzel Perryman and JK Scott were the Chargers' captains. The Bolts won the toss and elected to defer. The Bolts started on defense and ended up having two defensive stops. Teair Tart intercepted Kyler Murray but failed to return as Arizona got another set of downs after the recovery. Khalil Mack then chased Murray around on third down to force a throwaway and a Cardinals punt. The Bolts' offense began at their own 12-yard line and moved efficiently down the field into Arizona territory. The Chargers hit a big pass to Jalen Reagor, but he fumbled the ball out of the back of the end zone for a touchback as Arizona started at its own 20. The Cardinals got past midfield, but the Bolts defense held strong and forced another punt. The Bolts started at their own 10 and picked up two first downs. Herbert hit Will Dissly on a screen pass for 18 yards to move the chains again. At the end of the first quarter, the teams remained scoreless.

The Chargers' drive stalled at the Arizona 41, but it didn't matter to Cameron Dicker, who set a team record with a 59-yard field goal to give the Bolts an early 3-0 lead.
