The New England Patriots rookie defends himself against criticism from Jerod Mayo

Over the course of the 2024 NFL season, the New England Patriots have not had a great performance at the wide receiver position so far. One player who has been a bit disappointing so far is rookie wideout Ja'Lynn Polk.

After being drafted No. 37 in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, Polk was expected to be a key playmaker from the start. So far in six games, he has caught just 10 passes for 78 yards and one touchdown.

After Polk's slow start to the year, Patriots first-year head coach Jerod Mayo spoke out and urged him to “get over this mental low.”

Mayo suspected that the newcomer's difficulties and lack of performance were all due to mental errors. This is an opinion that Polk clearly disagrees with.

In a recently published quote from Mass LivePolk shot back at his head coach's comments. It seems there's a little drama brewing in New England.

“I don’t have any mental health problems at all. No mental problems. I think I have the best hands in the league. So I feel like my drops are not a problem at all,” Polk said.

Apparently Polk didn't appreciate Mayo's words. He completely disagreed and wasn't afraid to tell the press that he disagreed with his head coach.

There is no doubt that Polk has the talent and potential to be a very special player at the wide receiver position for the Patriots. However, he needs to start showing that talent and potential on the field.

With Drake Maye now the starting quarterback, there are no excuses at wide receiver. Jacoby Brissett's poor quarterback play was an excuse in the first five weeks, but that won't work moving forward.

In Maye's debut, Polk caught just one pass on four targets for four yards. These numbers must improve in the future.

That being said, it might be something to keep an eye on. A head coach and a rookie wide receiver publicly disagreeing like this isn't a pretty look and should be kept an eye on.
