The Atlanta Hawks and young star forward Jalen Johnson have agreed to a massive contract extension.

Johnson has agreed to a five-year, $150 million extension to his rookie contract.

Johnson's $150 million is fully guaranteed.

Johnson joined Jalen Green (Rockets), Alperen Şengün (Rockets), Cade Cunningham (Pistons), Evan Mobley (Cavaliers), Scottie Barnes (Raptors), Jalen Suggs (Magic), Franz Wagner (Magic), Moses Moody (Warriors) to. Trey Murphy III (Pelicans) and Corey Kispert (Wizards) sign new contract extensions.

The 22-year-old has gradually found his role with the Hawks since the team drafted him out of Duke University in the 2021 NBA Draft. Johnson had his breakout season in the 2023-24 season, when he averaged 16.0 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.2 steals in 33.7 minutes per game and had a shooting percentage of 52 in 56 appearances Hitting .511/.355/.728 starts.

However, injuries derailed Johnson's season after he suffered a second-degree lateral ankle sprain. In response to his ankle injury, Johnson said he will wear new shoes and an ankle brace to provide more support and prevent future problems.

For his career, Johnson averaged 9.1 points per game, 5.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists while shooting 50.6 percent from the field and 32.8 percent from three.

Johnson was a standout player at Duke, even though the team had one of its worst seasons in recent memory. Still, Johnson was solid when he was available to play. In 13 games, Johnson averaged 11.2 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game.

Before the end of the college season, Johnson announced that he would forgo the remainder of Duke's season to prepare for the 2021 NBA Draft. His decision raised a lot of questions, but he was confident in it and in the end it worked out well.

The Hawks selected Johnson with the No. 20 pick in 2021 and he will likely play a big role for the team in the coming years.

Atlanta is one of the youngest teams in the league, and while not many have high expectations for them this season, they still have the talent. Johnson will play a big role for the team alongside Trae Young, Clint Capela and their No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, Zaccharie Risacher.

The Hawks traded away Dejounte Murray this offseason, so a lot will depend on Johnson taking a big step forward and leading the team toward a bright future.
