Former police chief and members of a search party take the stand on the second day of the Delphi murder trial

DELPHI, Ind. (WNDU) – The trial continues for Richard Allen, the man accused of murdering Abby Williams and Libby German in Delphi seven years ago.

The highly anticipated trial began Friday with fiery opening statements from both the prosecution and defense, as well as emotional testimony from Libby's grandmother, older sister and father. For a recap of the first day, click here.

On Saturday, which was only supposed to last half a day, the public prosecutor called three more witnesses to the stand.

According to our sister station WTHR, the first of those witnesses was former Delphi Police Chief Steve Mullin, who recalled the day the girls went missing and said he still had hope when the first round of searches ended on February 13, 2017 .

“I still believed at the time that they would return home,” Mullin said.

Jake Johns, a longtime Delphi resident, also commented Saturday. He said he found Libby's tie-dye shirt while helping search.

Another member of the search party, Pat Brown, cried as he recounted finding the girls' bodies near the Monon High Bridge.

“At first I thought they were mannequins,” Brown told the jury. Then he started crying as he realized, “We found her.”

Jurors were released for the weekend after Brown's emotional testimony, as jurors were told the next witness would be lengthy.

The trial continues Monday morning.
