Dermot Mulroney Talks New Fire Chief's Role on 'Chicago Fire'

Dermot Mulroney's new role in Chicago Fire is a turning point for the actor.

The 60-year-old stopped by the third hour of TODAY on October 21 to talk about his new role as fire chief on the hit NBC show and took a moment to explain why Chicago holds a special place in takes up his heart.

Mulroney spent a lot of time in Illinois as a student at Northwestern University and returned to Chicago to film the 1997 film “My Best Friend's Wedding.” Now he's back in town to film Chicago Fire.

“Are you taking a memory tour?” TODAY's Al Roker asked the star.

While filming Chicago Fire in his new role as Chief Dom Pascal, Mulroney had the opportunity to interact with some familiar faces.

“This is the most amazing thing. I meet people I have worked with. But what’s even more interesting is that I now work with their children,” he said. “For example, Marissa, who does my hair, is the daughter of the set designer from 'My Best Friend's Wedding'.”

Mulroney starred alongside Julia Roberts in the popular '90s film.

“Of course, I immediately took footage of the tour boat passing under the bridge and sent it to my friend Julia,” he explained, referencing a famous scene shared by their characters in the film.

Mulroney further explained that Rick LeFevour, who worked as a stunt coordinator on “My Best Friend's Wedding” and acted as Mulroney's double in some scenes in the film, has also returned to his life.

“Now I’m being doubled by his son Rick Jr. I guess that means I'll never grow old in Chicago. “No, they keep me young, especially from behind, right?” he said.

“Chicago Fire” is in its 13th season and Mulroney said he was lucky to be part of such a “well-run show.”

“It's amazing. Firstly, it's nice to have a permanent job for once. Thank you, NBC, for that. What took so long?” he joked. “And working with an incredible cast that is so close together.”

Mulroney noted that he is learning a lot in his new job and training quite a bit while filming physically demanding scenes.

“With such a well-run show, it’s something new every day and it’s great to be part of a popular series,” he said.

Mulroney steps into the shoes of Eamonn Walker, who played Wallace Boden for twelve seasons. After serving as the battalion chief of Fire Station 51, his character became deputy district chief in season 10.

In May, fans learned that Walker would no longer be a series regular. At the time, Deadline reported that his character would not be killed off and would likely return in a recurring role.
