US Drought Monitor: Average drought values are increasing slightly: The Alabama Weather Blog

The latest US drought monitor was released on Thursday and it should come as no surprise that some readings have increased. It has been so dry across the state and this trend will continue for a while.

There was no change in the counties compared to last week, although there were no unusual dry or drought conditions. That’s still 12.5% of the state.

The proportion of unusual drought has decreased and is in addition to the moderate drought. There is an area of moderate drought in far northern Alabama and also to the west in Lamar and Pickens counties. Much of central to southwest Alabama also falls into this category.

Severe drought has increased slightly to 1.59% of the state. Small areas of Lauderdale, Limestone and Madison counties continue to lie in this and now in southern Perry, western Dallas, eastern Marengo and northern Wilcox. It wouldn't surprise me to see this increase next week as we don't have any significant rain forecast.
