Although he has played the role of Venom on screen for six years now, Hardy has never met PoisonUntil recently, 's co-creator Todd McFarlane and ComicBook were involved in bringing the two creatives together for the first time.

In conversation with Tom Hardy and Venom: The Last Dance We asked writer/director Kelly Marcel if they could remember who created the iconic comic book character, and both quickly mentioned McFarlane. “I just wanted to say from a personal perspective that it was a joy to see this character I created so long ago (on screen) with David Michelinie,” McFarlane told Hardy and Marcel. “Hardly a day goes by when I don't run into someone. Usually kids come up and say, 'Man, I just love those.' Poison Movies, Todd.' “I just came up with a design that we had no idea (would catch on), and you're putting it out into the world now, right? It was just a real joy to sit back and watch. I just want to thank you.”

“We love him, we love him,” Marcel told McFarlane. “We’re such big fans.”

McFarlane and Hardy then had an entertaining conversation.

“Thank you for creating Venom,” Hardy said to McFarlane, prompting the creator to respond: “Oh no, you guys are taking it to the next level.”

“Oh no, we get to play with him,” Hardy added. “So thank you very much.”

In the two live-action films released Poison has grossed over $1.3 billion at the global box office. The coming Venom: The Last Dance will undoubtedly push that number even higher, while the character's future may be even more up in the air than the sequel's title suggests.

McFarlane's influence on Marvel Comics (and comics in general) has been felt not only in the Venom feature films (which also feature non-Venom characters he helped create), but even in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This summer's hit film Deadpool and Wolverine was an homage to McFarlane's iconic 1987 cover Incredible Hulk #340with the Hulk's reflection in Wolverine's clutches, recreating the moment with Hugh Jackman and Mark Ruffalo's Hulk in a brief moment.
