Wrong penalty by the Steelers against the Jets ends in disaster for Pittsburgh

Well, that escalated quickly. The Pittsburgh Steelers had the first swing against the New York Jets on Sunday Night Football. On the first drive of the game, Russell Wilson and the offense marched the ball down the field and scored a field goal.

The defense was on fire early on. New York's offense gained five minus yards on its first drive and went out of bounds three times. The next time the Jets got the ball, Pittsburgh pushed toward running back Breece Hall in what would have been the equivalent of a tackle for loss.

Then the referees imposed a penalty for an incorrect decision against Pittsburgh.

As Hall was tackled by Steelers defenders, defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi threw Hall to the ground as the referees blew the whistle. Amazingly, this display of effort, which occurred microseconds after the final whistle, was apparently enough to warrant a 15-yard personal foul.

On the very next play, Aaron Rodgers found Hall for an 18-yard catch-and-run. Seven plays later, Hall hit a rushing touchdown.

A fake call against Larry Ogunjobi gave the Jets new life. Instead of potentially stopping New York's offense and opening the game with consecutive possessions, that controversial decision netted seven points for the Jets – giving them an early lead over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

With Russell Wilson at the helm, we knew this offense would have its growing pains. Now being forced to play from the back won't help. Many more calls in a game like this could be enough to finish off the Steelers for the night.

Regardless, Pittsburgh needs to find a way to overcome some questionable officiating and get back on its feet. There's a lot at stake in this game.
