LOS ANGELES – The 2024 World Series will pit the City of Angels against the City that Never Sleeps.

The New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers meet in the Fall Classic, pitting the two most populous cities in the United States and some of baseball's most storied franchises against each other for the Commissioner's Trophy.

The success of franchises is not new; The Yankees have an MLB-high 27 World Series titles, while Los Angeles has seven championships, the sixth-most in baseball.

This is the first time in more than 40 years that the two teams will meet in the World Series, but when it comes to playing for the title, the two franchises are very familiar with each other. The Yankees and Dodgers have played in the World Series 11 times, the most meetings in league history.

With issue #12 of Yankees vs. Dodgers on deck, here's a look at the history of the Yankees and Dodgers in the World Series:

Last Yankees-Dodgers World Series

The last World Series meeting between New York and Los Angeles was in 1981, when the Dodgers won their fifth title in franchise history.

New York won the first two games of the series at home and took a 2-0 lead, but Los Angeles came back and won four straight games – the first three at home and the last in New York – to win the World Series.

One of the series' biggest moments came in Game 5; With the series tied 2-2, the Yankees holding a 1-0 lead entering the seventh inning, Pedro Guerrero and Steve Yeager hit back-to-back home runs to give the Dodgers the lead and eventual victory. In Game 6, Los Angeles' offense came through and won the title with a score of 9-2.

The 1981 World Series marked the first time co-MVPs were awarded, with Guerrero, Yeager and Ron Cey sharing the honor.
