The Washington Spirit, buoyed by the efforts of Heather Stainbrook and Makenna Morris, defeated the Chicago Red Stars 2-0 at Audi Field on Sunday.

Stainbrook scored the first goal in the 31st minute with a right-footed shot from the center of the penalty area following a corner. Morris sealed the win with a goal in the 83rd minute, assisted by Ashley Hatch.

Morris had two shots on goal for Washington (17-2-6). Hatch was also decisive, shooting five shots.

Chicago (10-2-13) struggled to find its rhythm despite several shots on goal. Ludmila had three shots but failed to convert any before being shown a red card for violence in the 72nd minute. Julia Grosso also made notable contributions with two shots, but was unable to break through Washington's defense.

Both teams struggled with disciplinary problems. Washington's Rosemonde Kouassi received a red card for violent behavior just minutes before Ludmila was sent off, leaving both teams down to 10 players.

Goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher made ten saves for Chicago, but couldn't fend off all of Washington's relentless attacks. Aubrey Kingsbury had a quieter day between the posts for Washington, making two saves.

Substitutions also played a role. Trinity Rodman came on as a substitute for Courtney Brown in the second half and immediately impacted the game with four shots on goal that kept Naeher busy until the end.

With this win, the Spirit consolidate their position at the top of the table while the Red Stars continue to fight.
