“Undisciplined” Giants defense gets torched by Saquon Barkley

The Giants defense played a picture-perfect Patsy and Saquon Barkley's triumphant return to MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

Barkley, who left the Giants in free agency, steamrolled his former team for 176 rushing yards — including three huge chunk runs and a 3-yard touchdown — in the Eagles' 28-3 run.

His inflated numbers led to a rushing attack that amassed 269 yards on the ground, which Pro Bowl defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence called “way too much to give up.”

“We knew that all 11 of us had to do our job going into this game, and if one guy didn't do that, he found a big play,” Lawrence said. “This is hard. We want to play it from 1 to 11, but if you don't do that it can lead to explosive games like this and that's unacceptable.”

Barkley was loudly booed before Philadelphia's first offensive possession and every time he touched the ball.

There were even videos online of fans burning his old Giants jerseys in the parking lot.

“Like I said during the week, I know what kind of player he was for this organization and who he was for me, so I have nothing but respect for him. I can’t control what other people think of him, but I know who he is,” Lawrence said. “Me and Saquon are friends. I have nothing against him or anything like that. The Eagles beat us, he’s part of the Eagles, and that’s it.”

Asked if he felt his former teammate “wanted that again against the Giants,” Lawrence replied: “I don't know if I feel that way, but that would make sense if that makes sense.” I’ve played with him for years and I know his attitude towards the game and that’s how he handled it today.”

Barkley, who signed a three-year, $37.75 million contract in free agency, broke free on a 55-yard run down the left sideline in the second quarter before scoring his sixth touchdown of the season (and the fifth on the ground) scored with 8:58 left before halftime.

He later ran for 41 and 38 yards in the second half.

“Saquon put up a couple runs on our undisciplined mistakes, I guess, and they stuck with it,” edge rusher Brian Burns said. “They smelled blood in the water and continued to put on these plays.”

Rookie safety Tyler Nubin has never played with Barkley and downplayed the startling confrontation with him at the goal line after one of quarterback Jalen Hurts' two tush-push touchdown runs.

“That's exactly how I play. I always talk to the other team. That gets me going,” Nubin said. “It’s all just funny stuff. It was just me and he decided to reciprocate. A lot of people don't say anything back, but he did, so it was fun.

“But we can’t give up that many yards against any defender or team.”
