Three things we learned from Liverpool vs Chelsea: Are the Reds title contenders?

Liverpool and Chelsea put on a show at Anfield on Sunday as two Premier League heavyweights showed their quality and the hosts cruised to victory.

Mohamed Salah and Curtis Jones' goals ensured Arne Slot's side stayed at the top of the Premier League, while Nicolas Jackson briefly kept pace with Chelsea's side.

Below is what we learned from an exciting tactical battle between Liverpool and Chelsea.

Jones highlights his potential

At the age of 23, it's time for Curtis Jones to kick and deliver consistently in the Premier League. The Liverpool academy youngster has been unlucky with injuries so far in his career, but he was everywhere on Sunday. He popped up and converted two penalties in the first half (one of which stood), made two saves at the crucial moment to deny Cole Palmer at the other end and scored the winning goal with a fine touch and finish. When we think of Liverpool's midfield we praise the new influence of Gravenberch and the quality of Mac Alliser and Szoboszlai, but Jones is often left out. His performance on Sunday was that of a true box-to-box midfielder, keeping Palmer fairly quiet, and if Jones can stay injury-free, Liverpool have their replacement in Jordan Henderson. However, it's taken Jones a few seasons longer than most to get to this stage, but he's finally a true starter. The next step? Stay fit and have a big impact on the games on a regular basis.

Jones gives Liverpool a 2-1 lead against Chelsea

Mohamed Salah's exquisite cross finds the wide-open Curtis Jones in the penalty area, who touches it before firing home Liverpool's opener against Chelsea at Anfield.

Chelsea's shaky defense missed Fofana and Cucurella

They lost, but Chelsea did a lot of good things at Liverpool and a draw would have seen few complaints from the hosts. Moises Caicedo was excellent in midfield, Jackson led the line well and players like Madueke, Neto and Palmer had their moments in attack. But it was in defense that Chelsea just couldn't get ahead and looked shaky throughout. With duo Wesley Fofana and Marc Cucurella missing through suspension, Chelsea looked unsure on the ball and both Colwill and Sanchez made big mistakes in the first half. The way Enzo Maresca wants to play means your defenders have to be brave on the ball, and Cucurella and Fofana fit that role perfectly. Maresca replaced Reece James and Tosin at the start of the second half, the former because he had just returned from injury and the latter struggling to fill in for Fofana. Chelsea will be at the top of the top four discussion and have come a long way in a short space of time, but defensive solidity is the area where they need to take the next step.

Jackson equalized for Chelsea against Liverpool

After a VAR review, Chelsea got back on level terms thanks to Nicolas Jackson's well-timed run and finished at Anfield just minutes into the second half.

Another, albeit small, step forward for Liverpool

This was a big win for Arne Slot at the start of his Liverpool tenure, but there is obviously still a lot of work to do before we start calling Liverpool real title contenders. Manchester City and Arsenal are still a step above the Reds, but if they find the right balance they will persevere and be in the title conversation by the end of the season. Liverpool weren't completely in control of this game and still looked suspect defensively on the counterattack when Chelsea played straight to one of their wingers, but they are on the right track. The extra control and composure they now have was evident when they scored their second goal to take the lead, putting the game away, and apart from a few desperate crosses at the end, Chelsea didn't look like getting an equaliser to achieve. This gives Slot the confidence that he can hold his own against the big boys and although Liverpool were expected to win, the face they made underlines how seamless the transition from Klopp to Slot has been. Seven wins from eight games, regardless of schedule, is a good start to the season. With a series of difficult Premier League and Champions League fixtures looming between now and January, we'll soon find out whether Liverpool are much further along on their journey.
