Week 7: The Colts' Opposing QB: An Analysis by Tyler Huntley

Thanks to them nflFastR Project and NFL NextGen Stats for the current data sources.

For those of you new to this space, I will be posting key QB stats each week to assess how well the upcoming opposing QB has performed. Yes, the O-line, receivers and play-calling affect these numbers, but they are primarily QB measures. I'll probably change the charts throughout the season. The comment will be short, but please let me know in the comments that statistics aren't everything. (Click on the charts for a larger view)

Tyler Huntley only has two starts this year, but let's still look at his overall stats.

  • He wasn't supported by a big running game and with Huntley under center, Miami is the first team with the most runs scored in the league (25th Arsr, 32nd Edp).
  • The opponent's pass defense was pretty basic and they dare them to beat their zone (29th opd, 1st oz%).
  • He wasn't put under much pressure at all, but he still scrambled a lot and took even more sacks (28. Pr.%, 12. Scr.%, 9. Sck.%).
  • He has a quick throw time that helps keep the pressure down, but that doesn't affect his passing depth as he throws the 7th longest passes of all QBs (27th TTT, 7th Adot).
  • However, his accuracy is terrible, which limits Yac and causes completions to be short (32. Cpoe, 31. Yac, 23. Ay/C).
  • Short completions + low completion rate + no Yac + many abandoned attempts = second-worst yards per attempt and fourth-lowest net yards per dropback.
  • Given his poor yardage efficiency, it's no surprise that he doesn't score many first downs or touchdowns (24 1%, 32 touchdown%).
  • The positive thing is that he doesn't turn the ball over often (23rd to%).

HOW WELL?

In all historical storylines, it represents the last two weeks. You can see that his Week 5 was better than Week 4, but still not good and much worse than Tua's averages.

HOW FAR?

He had good completion depth in Week 5, but only averaged 2.9 yards in Week 4.

TO WHO?

This is the season where all of Miami's quarterbacks come together. No wonder Hill and Waddle are in the top two and are pretty evenly matched.

HOW EXACTLY?

Tua had been generally accurate, but late last year the accuracy declined and neither Skylar Thompson (Weeks 2-3) nor Tyler Huntley (Weeks 4-5) showed any improvement.

HOW FAST?

Tua always threw the ball quickly, but Thompson and Huntley are also below average in TTT.

WHERE?

This is only Week 5 for Huntley. No success in depth or short distances, but some good throws between 10 and 20 yards and the screens on the right added value.
