Wolves against Man City: Winning goal a “grey area” – but what does the law say?

Replays of the incident also showed Silva moving up and nudging his Portugal teammate Sa as the corner kick came in.

The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but a player cannot be offside after a corner.

By the time Stones hit the ball, Silva had moved away from Sa and assumed he did not interfere with the goalkeeper's vision or ability to get to the ball.

However, it could be argued that Silva should have been penalized for a foul on the goalkeeper.

Wolves boss Gary O'Neil did not refer to this specific incident when discussing the decision, instead claiming that the original offside call should have been against Silva.

“I’m trying to stay calm,” he said on Sky Sports. “I was involved in a few of them and there weren’t many that went in our favor, so I was expecting this outcome.”

“There's a certain gray area that can go either way, and once it did, I wasn't sure it would go our way.”

Former Manchester City and Aston Villa defender Micah Richards added to Sky Sports: “I would like a goal for that because I don't think there is too much contact.”

“But the fact is that he (Silva) is still in the way of the goalkeeper, which I think affected the game. They want consistency because sometimes it is there and sometimes it isn’t.”

“There's a slight push that throws the goalkeeper off balance so he's not ready. So I can understand why Wolves are hurt at this particular moment.”

Former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge also said on Sky Sports: “Bernardo played it perfectly because he timed it perfectly. When the header went into the net, it came off the goalkeeper. It's like, 'I did my job, but.' I didn't influence it.

“I do think he influenced the goalkeeper slightly. It’s the timing of the header.”
