Who is the SEC MVP so far? The best and worst results of our SEC football midseason

Who is the SEC midseason MVP? How about the league's best game yet, its worst disappointment and its most exciting match yet to come? The 2024 SEC schedule is halfway through and we have midseason answers for everything and more. Some of the league's best, worst and other superlatives so far:

Best game

Alabama 41, Georgia 34: It was well on its way to being a snoozer, but the Bulldogs turned it into a thriller with a furious comeback that culminated with Georgia briefly taking a 34-33 lead in the fourth quarter. Carson Beck celebrated the Crimson Tide secondary in the second half, but a late interception by UA freshman Zabien Brown sealed the upset for the home team (yes, UGA was the favorite in Tuscaloosa).

The most disappointing team

Auburn: Who else? Not that the Tigers were expected to contend for an SEC title, but when an offensive-minded head coach brings in a new offensive coordinator and faceplants the offense, that's the worst prospect for a program that was at least expected to that it will improve in 2023 With Vanderbilt showing signs of life, there is no guaranteed SEC win in the remaining AU schedule.

MONEY MATTERS: How much does Kalen DeBoer make? How an Alabama football coach's contract compares to the SEC

PANIC INDICATOR: Reading the panic meter for Alabama football, Tennessee, Georgia and Ole Miss

League MVP

WR Tre Harris, Ole Miss: At the end of the season, the right answer could well be a quarterback. But at the halfway point, there's no denying the tremendous impact Harris had on the Rebels' offense. He terrorizes cornerbacks on downfield throws with his size and instinct to catch the ball at the peak. He already has 987 receiving yards with six touchdowns and could easily finish the regular season with more than 1,500 yards. Ole Miss is one loss away from being eliminated from the playoffs, but if Harris keeps up his pace, that loss may not happen.

Weakest remaining schedule

Missouri: The Tigers have a tough task ahead of them this week at Alabama, but beyond that it's a winnable stretch against Oklahoma, South Carolina, Mississippi State and Arkansas. Mizzou will have the advantage at quarterback in all four cases.

Toughest schedule remaining

Florida: Rest this idle week, Gators. They need it to get through two rivalry games (Georgia and FSU) as well as Texas, LSU and Ole Miss. With QB Graham Mertz out this year with an injury, rookie DJ Lagway will have to learn some tough lessons.

Best matchup to come

Alabama at LSU, Nov. 9: You could make a case for a few games in the second half of the schedule, but this game stands out not only for its tradition but also for potential playoff berths. QB Garrett Nussmeier shut out Ole Miss in overtime two weeks ago, and the Tigers get big gains with the transfer of WR Aaron Anderson, formerly of the Crimson Tide. Alabama needs a big win here as new coach Kalen DeBoer is having a wild ride in his first season in Tuscaloosa.

The most devastating injury

Harold Perkins, LB, LSU: The Tigers lost a phenomenal athlete in Perkins who can play multiple linebacker positions at a high level. He is one of the five best athletes in the conference and will be sorely missed heading into the home stretch of the season. Luckily for LSU, LB Whit Weeks, who made 18 stops against Ole Miss, has emerged as a force in the linebacking corps.

Biggest surprise

Vanderbilt 40, Alabama 35: If you wish to raise any objections regarding this, please direct all feedback to the Complaints Box. It is taken out once a week.

The hottest seat

Billy Napier, Florida: The Gators are likely facing a lost season, and the rumors of UF moving from Napier aren't going away. It's more a question of when, not if. Behind Napier, however, Hugh Freeze has replaced Sam Pittman as the SEC's second-best seat.
