AP Top 25 teams rise and fall in Week 9

As we summarize the results of an active slate of college football games over the weekend, let's take a shot at predicting which top 25 teams will move up and down in the Week 9 rankings.

Results across the SEC will have the biggest impact on this week's Top 25 rankings, following a Top 15 battle on Rocky Top and a Top 5 matchup on Forty Acres where voters will determine the teams' affiliation to reshuffle some key spots near the top of the poll.

And in the Big Ten, a team moves up the rankings after a decisive home win, while the defending college football champions are in decline after a second straight loss.

What will AP voters think of all the changes?

SI reveals our predictions for which teams will make the biggest moves up and down in the AP Top 25 rankings as we look ahead to Week 9 action.

Last week's ranking: No. 5

Desperate to avoid a costly second loss, the Bulldogs played like their backs were against the wall and turned in a top-notch defensive performance in a win at No. 1 Texas.

Georgia's defense generated seven sacks and forced four takeaways, which the offense converted into 17 points, keeping the Longhorns off the scoreboard entirely in the first half.

Is that enough to get you to #1 in this week's rankings?

That's possible, considering that almost all of last week's first-place votes are up for grabs, and a win against the No. 1 team in the country could be considered enough for the No. 5 team to make that jump to accomplish.

But voters are more likely to reward Oregon's undefeated record and will remember Georgia's loss earlier this year to an Alabama team that now has two losses.

Last week's ranking: No. 1

It's time to examine the Longhorns' offense, which was so unhinged in the face of Georgia's pressure that Steve Sarkisian briefly swapped Quinn Ewers for Arch Manning in the first half.

But it was Ewers who came back into the game and led two crucial touchdown drives in the third quarter, making it an 8-point game and putting the Bulldogs behind for a while.

Still, this was the Longhorns' biggest test in the SEC to date, and the loss is a stark reminder that consistently winning in this league will be a tall order.

Texas has now lost its last five home games against top-five opponents, and while its path to the playoffs is still clear, its record has taken a hit as wins over Michigan and Oklahoma no longer look very impressive.

A drop from No. 1 is certain, but we still expect the Longhorns to remain in the top five in this week's rankings as voters will consider them the best single-loss team in the country.

Last week's ranking: No. 11

There was an element of surprise and relief that contributed to the celebration when the Vols beat the Crimson Tide in Neyland two years ago, but this time it felt almost as expected.

And as the Big Orange faithful lit their victory cigars after a 24-17 victory over Alabama in the game on the third Saturday in October, Tennessee took a big step closer to College Football Playoff contention.

That's despite some sluggish early offense that raises legitimate questions about the trajectory of quarterback Nico Iamaleava.

But in the meantime, the Vols' solid offense and physical defense have led this team to a 6-1 record and an inside track in the playoff hunt.

That should move Tennessee into the top 10 of this week's rankings at the expense of Alabama and head into an open week, with a date at Georgia the only major obstacle on the schedule.

Last week's ranking: No. 7

Alabama fans probably expected a few bumps in the road as Kalen DeBoer found his way, but a loss to Vanderbilt, a near-loss to South Carolina and a loss to Tennessee put the Tide's playoff hopes in jeopardy in mid-October, and That's almost unimaginable. I thought back to the previous season.

It is the first time since 2007 that Alabama has lost two games before November, and the first season since 1984 that the program has lost to both Vanderbilt and Tennessee as it enters an identity crisis stemming from the historically dominant Nick Saban years.

That brilliant offense that seemed unstoppable against Georgia has since lost momentum, taking the lead three times on three of its last four possessions against the Vols, the fourth being an interception by Jalen Milroe.

AP's Top 25 voters will want to punish the Tide, which should at least drop into the Top 15 while other lower-ranked teams win this weekend.

Last week's ranking: No. 16

This isn't just a basketball school this season, as first-year head coach Curt Cignetti has breathed new life into this offense and brought the Hoosiers straight into the College Football Playoff.

It would be the first real test of going up against Nebraska's stout defense, and Indiana passed it with flying colors, moving to 7-0 for the second time ever after defeating the Cornhuskers in a 56-7 victory.

Indiana has outscored opponents 80-0 in the first quarter in seven games and has outscored teams 94-17 in the fourth quarter, including 14-0 against Nebraska.

IU has won its first 4 Big Ten games by an average of nearly 4 touchdowns each, ranks 2nd nationally in overall point differential against Power Four opponents this season, and is one of two teams still in not behind in a game.

How realistic are the Hoosiers' playoff hopes? They should be the favorite in 4 of their last 5 games – Washington, Michigan State, Michigan and Purdue – with the date at Ohio State being the exception.

Last week's ranking: No. 24

Don't underestimate Michigan's dismal passing attack. It's really terrible.

The offense features three quarterbacks and has 6 passing touchdowns, 8 interceptions and 3 fumbles this season.

And after a 21-7 loss at Illinois, the Wolverines had three losses before the start of November for the first time since the 2014 season, the year before Jim Harbaugh came aboard as head coach.

With his departure, every week it looks more like the program he left behind is reverting back to its pre-Harbaugh state in record time. This is the week Michigan drops out of the rankings.

-We expect Oregon to be the No. 1 team in the country this week, moving up from No. 2, with voters more likely to reward the Ducks' undefeated record than Georgia's lone loss.

– No. 23 Army moved up in the rankings last week and should climb back up after improving to 7-0 with an impressive win over East Carolina, which once again showcased its overwhelming backfield talent, and the Black Knights are the other team in college football to beat so far this season.

— Likewise for Navy after it punched Charlotte in the mouth in a suffocating defensive effort that included two interceptions returned for touchdowns.

— BYU had some defensive issues, but Jake Retzlaff scored a game-winning touchdown for the Cardiac Cougars, beating Oklahoma State and remaining perfect in the Big 12.

– Oklahoma held on to 36 votes in last week's rankings but looks set to lose them all after a shocking performance against South Carolina in which the offense scored touchdowns off turnovers on consecutive possessions and allowed 9 sacks. This team is lost.
