Charlotte 3-0 DC United (Oct 19, 2024) Match Analysis

Pep Biel broke through early in the second half, Patrick Agyemang scored his 10th goal and visiting Charlotte FC knocked DC United out of the playoffs with a 3-0 win Saturday night in both teams' regular season finale.

Liel Abada added a late third goal and Brandt Bronico assisted on the first two goals for Charlotte (14-11-9, 51 points), which had already secured its spot in the MLS Cup playoffs and finished fifth in the Eastern Conference.

They face fourth-place Orlando in a first-round playoff series and the club's first postseason games since joining the MLS in 2022.

Kristijan Kahlina made three stops to keep the Eastern Conference's 12th clean sheet and send DC United (10-14-10, 40 points) to a loss, although a win or a draw would have given the Black and Red a chance for their first postseason -Appearance since 2019.

Instead, Atlanta secured the ninth and final spot in the East with its win in Orlando.

DC's Christian Benteke became the MLS' top scorer with 23 goals, three ahead of his nearest competitors.

However, he failed to capitalize on several chances for a DC team that had the upper hand in the first half.

The best came in the first minute, when Kahlina's outstretched leg parried the Belgian's low attempt. Later, Benteke was clearly offside for two apparent goals in the 39th and 65th minutes.

Charlotte looked much better at the start of the second half and took the lead through Biel in the 58th minute.

Biel started the attack himself with an excellent diagonal outlet pass wide to Bronico and then moved up the field to get into the penalty area in front of some DC defenders.

Bronico returned the pass with a low cross towards the penalty spot, and Biel fired a low finish past Bono from around twelve meters away.

Ayemang doubled the lead with another cross from Bronico in the 75th minute, and Abada secured the points in the 90th minute with a late shot from Karol Swiderski.
