Michigan State Spartans vs. Iowa Hawkeyes football

Victory for MSU!

Michigan State gets back over .500 with a 32-20 win over Iowa. The Spartans are now 4-3 and 2-2 in the Big Ten. Against a stout Iowa defense, Michigan State didn't manage a punt all night, with only one Chiles INT. Two 100-yard receivers in Montorie Foster and Nick Marsh made huge plays, Kayron Lynch-Adams, Nate Carter and Chiles led the rushing attack with over 200 yards on the ground, and Chiles threw 22 completions on 30 passes for a total of 256 yards and one TD. MSU now turns its attention to struggling rival Michigan. Both teams will enter the game with identical overall and conference records and could go from a win in the rivalry to a spark at the end of the year. It's another primetime kick, 7:30 p.m. on Big Ten Network.

Touchdown, MSU!

This is one hell of a ride. Nate Carter hits a short TD run after a variety of highlight plays. Nick Marsh shone with over 100 yards on the night, joining Montorie Foster in the club. Kayron Lynch-Adams is up to 86 yards on the ground and Chiles appears to be flawless. After a two-minute timeout, the Spartans lead 32-20.

Iowa strikes quickly, now 25-20

Kaleb Johnson is good and he finally proved it to the Spartan Stadium crowd. After 75 yards to the house the score is 25-20 with just over 7 minutes remaining.

The Jonathan Kim game

It's 6/7 and a school record for Kim, and Michigan State is now 25-14. There are 7:34 minutes left in the game.

McNamara prevailed, Spartans in business

Nikai Martinez gets his second pick of the year, and it was huge. MSU is now at Iowa's 30 as the fourth quarter clock slowly winds down. It's time to capitalize if you're MSU.

Kim equals the school record with the 5th FG, 22-14 is the MSU lead

Jonathan Kim is having a night. He buried a 55-yarder, tying the program record for most field goals made in a game. MSU moved the ball easily before a penalty and a sack, but was able to extend the lead with points. Now it's crunch time.

Let's move on to the fourth

Nick Marsh and Aidan Chiles grab a lot of headlines, but Montorie Foster is the real deal. He continued his big night with a catch and run that gave MSU a run to start the fourth quarter. The Spartans lead 19-14.

Iowa gets back to within one score at 19-14 late in the third quarter

The Hawkeyes have life. After two drives in the second half, Iowa scored two touchdowns. This was a rush from Michigan native Brendan Sullivan. MSU now has a chance to respond, which should be a fun ending.

Touchdown, MSU!

There's your touchdown! A beautiful drive full of big plays led to Chiles finding Foster for an 18-yard score after a long career-long quest for a big gain. 19-7 Spartans now with less than five minutes left in the third quarter.

Iowa on the board to start the second half

Well, a shutout would probably never happen. McNamara finally finds a good rhythm and the Hawkeyes score their first points. It feels like the Spartans will have to find the end zone at some point to get a win. There are just under ten minutes left in the third quarter.

12-0 Spartans at halftime

Michigan State's defense stopped and gave the offense a chance for more points, but Kim ended up missing his first field goal of the season, this one from 55 yards. Aidan Chiles is 10/16 and has rushed for 132 yards at halftime, while MSU has rushed for 118 yards as a team. However, the history so far has been the zero that has led Michigan State under the Iowa name. Iowa ball to start the second half.

The Spartans take a 12-0 lead after another field goal

Jonathan Kim is every fantasy football owner's dream right now. He's 4-4 on field goals after another MSU drive stalled before reaching the end zone. They'll have a 12-0 lead right now, but it could be bigger.

Another Iowa punt, the Spartans' offense steps up

Iowa was able to mount its first extended push, but it failed. A touchback on an Iowa punt gives MSU the ball at their own 20.

Kim hits another one, MSU takes a 9-0 lead

Chiles leads a nice drive, led by a great connection to Nick Marsh. This offense moved the ball very well tonight, but didn't create much distance due to the lack of a touchdown. Early in the second quarter.

Iowa misses the 58-yard field goal

The MSU defense did not allow a first down in the first quarter, and Iowa was unable to take advantage of the turnover. A missed field goal gave the Spartans good field position early in the second quarter.

Chiles picked, Iowa in positive territory

There is the turnover. MSU was aided by a penalty and decided to continue to be aggressive. It backfired. Chiles throws an interception, putting Iowa in MSU territory. Now the defense faces a real test.

Defense is back in high demand

How about three more and out? Cal Haladay gets a great third-and-short stop and the Spartan defense is humming early.

Kim strikes again, 6-0 Spartans

An early goal from Montorie Foster, a couple of nice runs from both defenders and a missed interception by Iowa lead to another scoring run for the Spartans. Two goals to two so far.

Three games and out for Iowa

In a game where run defense is perhaps the biggest key for Michigan State, this was a nice first drive. Two runs were stuffed and then Khris Bogle put pressure on Cade McNamara and forced an incompletion.

The Spartans' opening attack results in Kim FG

I know I wasn't the only one holding my breath hoping there wouldn't be any sales. It didn't come on this drive. A sharp shot by Michigan State leads to a Jonathan Kim field goal just outside the red zone. Good start for MSU, defense now in the plus.

First the offensive

Let's go!

Michigan State will play its fourth straight night game when it hosts Iowa on Saturday at Spartan Stadium.

After a bye week, Michigan State (3-3, 1-2 Big Ten) is in danger of falling below the .500 mark. With three straight ranked opponents awaiting the Spartans after this week, this game appears to be crucial to the Spartans' postseason dreams.

As always, Iowa (4-2, 2-1) is led by a strong defense. Michigan State needs to get its turnover issues under control as scoring will be difficult enough. On offense, former Michigan quarterback Cade McNamara is Iowa's No. 1 prospect, and the Hawkeyes' running performance has improved compared to last year.

The Spartans hope to be healthy after a week of recovery and get another primetime spot to show they're ready to win in their first year under Jonathan Smith.
