4 arrested, 1 dead in connection with Oct. 8 shooting

AMERICUS, Ga. (WALB) – An update has been provided on a shooting Tuesday, Oct. 8, in Americus that led to the arrest of two teenagers.

According to a release from the Americus Police Department, officers were initially dispatched to a report of shots fired in the area of ​​Crawford Street and Douglas Drive. An officer who was patrolling the area at the time saw three juveniles firing shots and then getting into a vehicle.

The officer was able to stop the vehicle and the suspects fled on foot. They were later identified and arrested.

Officers were later dispatched to a report of a person shot at a residence on Oglethorpe Avenue. The victim was identified as 18-year-old James Wilson.

He was taken by EMS to Phoebe Sumter Medical Center and later transferred to a facility in Macon.

On Saturday, Oct. 19, investigators were told that Wilson had died from his injuries, Americus police said.

WALB previously reported that a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old were arrested and charged. Now another 16-year-old juvenile and 42-year-old Martel Marquis Smith have also been charged in connection with this shooting.

The three teenagers face the following charges:

  • Serious bodily harm
  • Possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony
  • Possession of a firearm by a minor

Smith faces the following charges:

  • Escape and/or attempt to escape
  • Felony drive-by shooting

According to Americus police, these charges have been upgraded to murder.
