If you want to know how to seduce someone, forget about dating gurus. Leave your psychologists, experts and coaches at the door. Because they know nothing compared to looking at Andrew Garfield and Amelia Dimoldenberg, whose now viral Date at the chicken shop The episode was one of the most anticipated in the history of the popular YouTube series.

There's a reason the internet's golden non-couple has had a digital stranglehold on us all since they first graced our screens together on the red carpet in 2022. And it's not because we're all secretly rooting for them to actually be together.

Frankly, it's completely irrelevant whether they even have a private relationship, platonic or not (not to mention it's none of our business). It's all about the power of your flirtation. Or, as the cool kids would say, their mood. And What It's a mood.

For those who don't know, some useful background information: Garfield and Dimoldenberg first met on screen at the GQ Men of the Year Awards in 2022, where the 30-year-old YouTube star did red carpet interviews . “I've been trying to get a date with you for a while now,” she deadpanned to the Oscar nominee, who admitted to being a fan of hers.

What followed was a giggly and hilarious conversation between two dangerously charming people who know exactly what they're doing when it comes to the delicate art we call flirting. “You look hot,” she later said of Garfield's GQ cover, after teasing him for looking like he was smelling his own armpit in the photo. “That’s very sweet. Do you have an armpit problem?” he asked and then complimented Dimoldenberg’s outfit.

The clip went viral and immediately sparked a cult of fans eager to see more of the duo. Her wish came true just a few months later when Dimoldenberg interviewed Garfield on the red carpet at the 2023 Golden Globes.

“We need to stop meeting like this,” she teased the actor, who replied that he “only ever (wanted) to see her in a red carpet interview.” He added that he wasn't sure if the couple “should explore this” because he was “afraid of what might come of it.” The interaction ended with Garfield signing a “best friend certificate” presented to him by Dimoldenberg.

As a result of these two conversations Date at the chicken shop Fans were desperate for Garfield to appear on the show, which featured Dimoldenberg flirting with celebrities in her typically snarky way. Finally her wish was fulfilled.

The episode was significantly different from others Appointments at the chicken shopnamely because the couple mainly talked about the prospect of actually meeting each other outside of the format. God, it was good television. Or satisfied, sorry. Honestly, who cares?

There were direct assertions (“I don't like games, Amelia”), romantic innuendos (“We met two cuties”) and even a game of make-out, marry, avoid. The competitors? fellow Spiderman Alumnae Tom Holland and Tobey McGuire – and of course Dimoldenberg himself, who politely avoided Garfield: “That’s flirting, Amelia!”

The reason this is all gold star seduction? Firstly, there is the sound. Neither Garfield nor Dimoldenberg take themselves too seriously as public figures; There's a distinct lack of snobbery in both of them, which makes the way they converse extremely relatable and captivating. Both are self-deprecating, confident and deliciously sarcastic.

Second, there are power dynamics – or (more accurately) lack thereof. Traditionally, the power dynamic between heterosexual couples is almost always in the man's favor because, well: patriarchy.

But for good flirting to happen, the power dynamic has to be volatile, a solid, bouncing thing that jumps back and forth between both parties in a single conversation. Dimoldenberg is in charge for a few seconds. Then it's Garfield. Then we go back to Dimoldengberg. And so forth. Think of it as an intellectual and sexual tennis game.

Third, there's the fact that we lack it, especially among celebrities. One reason Dimoldenberg's series is so successful is its authenticity. Gone are the bland pretenses and rituals that characterize the usual press trips.

This is real, human stuff, full of intimacy, humor and connection. Yes, I realize that a show is still a show, and I suspect that much of it has been carefully written and produced. But it seems like honest, old-fashioned flirting, which we could all use a lot more of – both on-screen and off.
