343 Industries' original vision for Halo Infinite was interesting. Both the F2P multiplayer and premium campaigns have come to fruition, but the team also worked on a new game type alongside long-time franchise partner Indeed Affinity.

The mode was codenamed Tatanka and would have been Halo's take on the then-popular battle royale trend (for reference: Call of Duty Warzone, a groundbreaking battle royale hit, reached 85 million players in less than a year and grossed many millions mTX sales).

Tatanka has not been officially confirmed or announced by either team, but it has been rumored for some time that BR mode has been canceled. Now we have the first real discussions about Halo Infinite's battle royale, courtesy of former Indeed Affinity game director Mike Clopper.

To LinkedInSays the former director that Tatanka would have been a “game changer” for the Halo franchise:

“MP Halo Infinite – I led a large team of designers working on a canceled battle royale mode for Halo. I believe this product could have been a game-changer for the franchise. We enjoyed playing it and working on it was still a fantastic experience.”

Now that 343i has been renamed Halo Studios, and moved from Slipspace to Unreal Engine 5It is highly unlikely that Halo Infinite will receive such new modes in the near or even medium future.

Halo Studios has confirmed this There are several Halo projects in development in UE5and there is speculation that a Halo Combat Evolved remake in Unreal Engine 5 could be in the works.
