Will the comet be visible tonight? Here's how to watch

play

If you haven't ventured out and looked at the sky in the last week – or in fact, all of 2024 – you're missing out on some of the spectacle.

First there were the Northern Lights, which danced and splashed a palette of colors across the night sky, leaving sky watchers in awe. And now it is the once-in-a-lifetime comet.

The comet first entered our orbit on October 12, when it was closest to Earth at about 44 million miles. Since then, observers, particularly in Wisconsin, have spotted comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS every night.

How long will the comet be visible? Here's what you should know about the comet that will soon disappear for 80,000 years.

Can I see the comet tonight?

The comet was at its best visible earlier this week, but now it's getting harder to see. The comet was as bright as the North Star until October 16th. And as it moves further from Earth, its brightness will decrease, but could still be visible to the naked eye until October 26, Space.com predicted.

By early November, the comet will completely disappear from view.

Is the comet visible to the naked eye?

Earlier this week, the comet was visible to the naked eye and you could capture it with your iPhone. But now you'll probably need binoculars or a telescope to see the comet dim.

As with the Northern Lights, the darker location without much light pollution is best for viewing.

The Hunter's Moon will reduce the comet's visibility

Thursday's full Hunter's Moon did not improve the comet viewing experience, as it is the brightest full moon of the year, Space.com said.

However, because the moon rises later Friday through Sunday, viewers have a better chance of seeing the comet even as it fades.
