Dodgers vs. Mets result, live updates: Los Angeles looks to advance to the World Series and defeat New York in NLCS Game 5

The New York Mets are officially on the ropes after another dominant performance from the Los Angeles Dodgers in their 10-2 win in Game 4 on Thursday. With the Dodgers leading 3-1 in the series and on the verge of advancing to their fourth World Series in the last eight seasons, the Mets could find themselves in the final 27 outs if they can't put together the kind of offensive performance that She won Game 2 7-3. In the first four games of the series, Los Angeles beat New York 30-9.

In Game 5, the Dodgers have Jack Flaherty on the field, with the right-winger looking to continue his postseason success (1-1, 2.92 ERA, 8 SO, 12.1 IP). Meanwhile, the Mets are pinning their hopes on lefty David Peterson, who had solid performances in brief appearances for New York this October (1-0, 2.08 ERA, 5 SO, 8.2 IP).

  • Lindor then gets a few feet in front of the right field fence. After 10 batters, Flaherty allowed one contact with exit velocities of 103.8 mph, 98.4 mph, 90.1 mph, 80.9 mph, 113.6 mph, 98.8 mph hour and 104.7 miles per hour. There are also two walks.

  • And then Francisco Lindor comes a few degrees away from hitting a two-run home run down the right field line. It flies just past the foul pole to the right, but that's hard contact that Flaherty allows.

  • The Mets continued in the second inning with a double by Francisco Alvarez. At this point, you start to wonder how long Jack Flaherty will last today given how aggressive the Dodgers have been with their bullpen, but this unit has shouldered a heavy load so far in this series

  • Mookie Betts singled to end the second inning. There's still a lot of game left, but the Dodgers are now 0-4 with runners in scoring position against David Peterson.

  • Strange little plate appearance for Ohtani. After seeing the Dodgers' first run on his first pitch, he called a timeout because he apparently had his eye on something, waved off the LA coach, hit a 3-1 slider out of the zone and then drew his fourth Walk in two games.

  • Mets 3, Dodgers 1

David Peterson hit a fastball to Ohtani in his first pitch that scored a run. Given the way the LA offense works, easy runs like that are deadly.

  • The Dodgers are back to two baserunners in the second after Andy Pages drops a single into the gap in right-center. With two outs comes Shohei Ohtani.

  • The inning is over, but it looks like Jack Flaherty has taken a step back with his command from Game 1. He's thrown just 17 of his 32 pitches for strikes, and the Mets are less likely to chase his break balls when they don't hit them into the stands. He allowed a total of two hits in Game 1, but allowed three hits in the first inning tonight.

  • Alonso also smashed a good pitch from Flaherty. That was a slider that fell out of the zone, but Alonso reached down and hit it 432 feet. Not many hitters can do that, but multiple Home Run Derby champions can.

  • Mets 3, Dodgers 0

That's a good start! Pete Alonso gets his first RBI of the series with a three-run home run in the bottom of the first. After failing to score a run against Jack Flaherty in Game 1, the Mets are on the field and then some after four batters.

  • Citi Field was about to go crazy when Mark Vientos hit a deep fly ball that landed short of the warning track. One loss for Flaherty, now comes Pete Alonso.

  • Just like David Peterson, Jack Flaherty is in trouble in the first part. He walked Brandon Nimmo and gave the Mets two ons with no outs.

  • And now both MVP candidates have leadoff hits. Francisco Lindor greeted Jack Flaherty with a 105 mph single to right field.

  • This opportunity passed quickly. David Peterson got a quick groundout from Teoscar Hernandez and a lineout from Freddie Freeman, then struck out Tommy Edman to keep the first inning scoreless.

  • And then Mookie Betts hits a catchable ball to right field, but Starling Marte lets it wobble as he slides for the catch. The Dodgers suddenly have runners on second and third with no outs to start the game.

  • Shohei Ohtani broke his 0-for-22 streak with the bases empty with a leadoff home run yesterday and has another hit today, this time a single against a diving Jeff McNeil. McNeil starts at second today, which is the first time he's played defense in more than a month.

  • David Peterson throws a first-pitch slider to Shohei Ohtani and we're at Citi Field.

  • Francisco Lindor receives the live version of his walk-up music. Jose Iglesias should try it too.

  • Matt Harvey warms up for the first pitch

Former Mets pitcher Matt Harvey throws out the ceremonial first pitch for Game 5:

In the postseason (during the Mets' run to the 2015 World Series), Harvey posted a 2-0 record and a 3.04 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 26 2/3 innings.

  • Can the Mets deliver with their backs against the wall?
