Andrew Garfield introduces an unusual red carpet accessory

Editor's Note: Look of the Week is a regular series that looks at the good, the bad and the ugly, revealing the most talked-about outfit of the last seven days.

Last night, British actor Andrew Garfield arrived at the premiere of his latest film, We Live in Time, at the London Film Festival with a surprising accessory. No, not the yellow paisley opera shawl – the life-size cutout of co-star Florence Pugh.

Pugh's rigid, two-dimensional form, which he carried under his arm like a beloved clutch on a night out, perfectly complemented Garfield's outfit. He opted for a tailored 70s-style Valentino suit by Alessandro Michele in a dark peacock shade and a statement floral silk shirt. His black leather Valentino loafers matched his belt, but Garfield wasn't complete without his 5-foot-4-inch cardboard cutout. At various points on the red carpet, he happily set Pugh down and posed with an arm around her lifeless waist.

The real Pugh – who couldn't make it to the premiere due to filming restrictions – shared pictures of Garfield and her floored lookalike on Instagram, calling the move “genius”. This isn't the first time a celebrity has used the medium of cardboard to evoke the presence of a colleague. In 2010, Will Ferrell arrived at a “Megamind” panel at Comic-Con with a clip of Brad Pitt after rumors swirled that the actor would appear there. There have even been a number of inanimate prom dates in the US, where students eschew corsages in favor of cardboard and instead tote around scale representations of Michael B. Jordan, Bernie Sanders and Danny DeVitto.

For anyone unsure whether Garfield's cardboard companion can be categorized as an accessory, according to Michael Kors, its definition is an “exclamation point on a man's or woman's outfit.” More than any matching shoe and belt combo, a cleavage of your co-star may be the loudest statement you can make.
