Friday morning report

This time yesterday, Baltimore's BWI broke a record low of 32°F. This morning the cold has spread further south with a new frost report. That's it! The warm-up starts today, takes us into the weekend and into next week, and there's a chance we'll go back to the 80s for a few days.

This report also includes some of the best supermoon photos and an interesting storm brewing off the coast.

This extends into southern Maryland, but if you're by the water, warmer temperatures should keep you safe.

Supermoon Photos: In Case You Missed It

Before we get to our forecast, I want to show you an interesting phenomenon off the East Coast that developed with the core of cold air. This created a twist in the atmosphere and formed a storm east of North Carolina. I'm pointing this out for two reasons: it's fascinating to watch on satellite AND it could happen again next week. Could this be a pattern worth exploring this winter?

This large vortex, a few hundred miles offshore, is a powerful storm that formed when colder air arrived.

I showed this on Wednesday and this cold core is the source of the spin-up.

Here we can see the color enhanced infrared satellite this morning. This spin is still strong and is moving further and further away.

A large air mass is dominating the eastern United States, pushing the storm offshore. This will be our primary weather pattern for the next week. Activity has shifted WEST and blizzards will continue to occur in the Rocky Mountains.

The next shot of colder air arrives Thursday. Similar to last week, it will create a vortex off the East Coast and form a storm just offshore.

A cold front ends the warm phase and takes us back to a real cooling by the end of the week.

Another rotation starts from the Mid-Atlantic.

REPEATING MY MESSAGE ON THE TOPIC OF LEGEND

I understand that there are some spelling and grammatical errors, as well as occasional other errors. I take responsibility for my mistakes and even the computer errors I may miss. I've made a few public statements over the years, but if you're new here you may have missed it: I have dyslexia and found out about it in my sophomore year at Cornell University. However, that didn't stop me from getting my degree in meteorology and being the first to receive the AMS CBM in the Baltimore/Washington area.

One of my professors told me that I had made it this far without knowing it and that I shouldn't let it be a crutch for the future. That was Mark Wysocki, and he was absolutely right! I miss my mistakes when proofreading myself. The automatic spell checker on my computer sometimes misses the mark and makes the problem worse. I can also make mistakes in forecasting. Nobody is perfect at predicting the future. All maps and information are correct. The “wordy” stuff can get sticky.

There was no editor to review my work when writing and have it ready to ship in a newsworthy time frame. Barbara Werner is a member of the web team that helps me maintain this website.
