What to expect from the fall storm heading to Arizona

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — It was a very nice start to the morning, with lows in the 70s and highs. This afternoon temperatures will rise to around 32 degrees. Our average high temperature this time of year is 89 degrees.

Winds are expected to increase across the state Thursday evening and early Friday before a cold front moves into Arizona.

There will be winds of 10 to 15 mph in the valley, but gustier winds are expected in the mountains today. Things will get even windier on Friday with the arrival of the front, with winds reaching 15 to 25 miles per hour in the Phoenix metropolitan area.

This Friday also marks a day of the first weather warning. A low pressure system will move across our state and bring significant changes. This low will significantly reduce temperatures and bring the risk of precipitation in the valley.

The chance of rain is around 50%, primarily due to a series of showers with embedded thunderstorms moving through the morning and early afternoon hours.

The probability of rain and snow is higher in higher altitudes. Above 7,000 feet, light snow is expected, with about 1-2 inches possible.

Thanks to the fast-moving front, there should be little rain. Nearly a tenth of an inch of rain is likely to occur in the valley, although isolated thunderstorms could bring higher amounts.

At this point Friday evening looks dry but cooler and windy.

The big thing you'll notice is the drop in temperature. Temperatures will be around 82 degrees on Friday, but will be as low as 78 degrees on Saturday.

That's 11 degrees below average and it will certainly feel like fall.

Enjoy the cool temperatures. Another ridge of high pressure will form over Arizona and temperatures will rise again. Starting Monday next week, temperatures will be above 90 degrees.
