Mountain West Conference commissioner Gloria Nevarez spoke Thursday about the drama surrounding San Jose State's women's volleyball team, as several schools have decided to forfeit games against the team because of a transgender athlete on their roster.

Nevarez said at Mountain West basketball media days that the losses to the Spartans are “not what we celebrate in college athletics.”

“It breaks my heart because it's people, young people, student-athletes on both sides of this issue who are receiving a lot of negative attention across the country. It just doesn’t feel right to me,” Nevarez told The Associated Press.

Boise State, Southern Utah, Utah State and Wyoming decided to forfeit games against San Jose State. Some Nevada players chose to sit out the game, but the school is playing the game anyway, saying state law prohibits a forfeit.

“I know what our team is going to do and we are going to show integrity,” Wolf Pack captain Sia Liillii told the Reno Gazzette Journal. “I think this is the hardest thing our team has ever been through, but I’m just happy that I have so many brave young women behind me and that I get to be captain of this team.”

Nevarez said transgender inclusion in women's sports is an issue she's still “learning a lot about.”

“I don’t yet know much about the language, the science or the national understanding of how this issue plays out,” she added. “So far the external influences are on both sides. It's an election year. It’s political, so it feels like a no-win because of the external pressure.”
