Google Pixel 9 launch results in “highest” quarterly sales ever

Google has never been a big player in the smartphone market, but Pixel sales continue to grow. According to a new report, Google Pixel recorded its “highest” quarterly sales ever in the third quarter of 2024, just as the Pixel 9 series was launched.

In a new report from Counterpoint researchThe smartphone market as a whole recorded a 2% increase in the third quarter of 2024, great news after several years of declining demand. The top five smartphone makers continue to hold steady, with Samsung leading the way, down to 19% compared to 20% in the same period last year. Apple remained at 16% year-on-year, while Xiaomi rose to 14%. Oppo and Vivo round out the top five with 9% each.

But there are also some interesting statistics outside of the top candidates.

Counterpoint says both Motorola and Huawei are experiencing year-over-year growth of about 30% globally, while Motorola also recorded its highest sales volume ever this quarter.

The same applies to Google Pixel.

Although there are no numbers to divide, Counterpoint says Google saw its “highest smartphone volume ever in a quarter” in the third quarter. This follows two separate launches. In May, just a few months before the start of the third quarter, the Pixel 8a hit the market, with sales increasing through July and the rest of the summer. Meanwhile, Google launched the Pixel 9 series in August, which clearly made an impression. Again, no specific numbers were announced, but since this is the highest quarter Google has ever achieved, it's pretty obvious that the Pixel 9 series has started with a bang.

In 2023, Google reached a “milestone” by shipping 10 million Pixel phones in one year and kicked off 2024 by winning “Best Smartphone” at MWC. Google has also seen explosive growth in Japan and is also seeing greater adoption in North America.
